Coach's take on 4-star Miami Hurricanes commit Joshua Moore: "What stands out is his athletic ability at that size"
Over the last four years, West Broward High School head football coach Brian McCartney has watched new Miami Hurricanes four-star wide receiver commit Joshua Moore blossom into one of the most sought-after prospects in the country.
On the gridiron, there’s not much that the 6-foot-4, 205-pounder can’t do, and at his size, McCartney himself is still sometimes surprised at some of the things Moore does daily.
“What stands out is his athletic ability at that size,” McCartney told CaneSport. ”There’s not a lot of people at that size that can drop down and take a hitch route nice and tight like he does like a little slot receiver. His athletic ability to highpoint the ball on a nice fade route even if it’s underthrown or something, he goes and gets it. His speed is underlining for him. People see his big size, but once he gets going, he goes fast as fast. He’s one of the biggest fans of his team. When his teammates score, he’s the first one to celebrate with them. Which is not typical.”
Since his freshman year at West Broward, Moore, who is the No. 129 overall prospect in the 2025 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking, has developed many areas of his game. Still, McCartney believes his role as a leader on the team has come the further since he arrived on campus.
Through six games this season, Moore has hauled in 32 catches for 510 yards and five touchdowns for the 4-2 Bobcats.
“I would say his leadership and how he works in practice,” McCartney said. “He always wants to practice. He’s always going against the scout team, and he’s always going against the defense. He wants to get better every single day.”
Off the field, McCartney says Moore is a gentle giant who he called one of the most humble kids he has ever coached, despite the national spotlight being on him.

“You wouldn’t know with him being 6-foot-4, 215 pounds that he is one of the top receivers in the country,” McCartney said. “He comes to my daughter’s soccer games, and he’s always a good friend to his friends. He really loves being around his family. He’s one of the most humble and respectable kids out there.”
After initially committing to the Florida Gators in the summer, Miami’s staff was unfazed by the verbal pledge and continued to chip away at Moore.
Since then, multiple members of Miami’s staff, including wide receivers coach Kevin Beard, head coach Mario Cristobal, offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, and many other staff members, have remained in contact with McCartney, Moore, and his family, which led to his eventual flip.
“That relationship is very deep,” McCartney said. “From coach KB, Mario, Dawson, (David) Cooney, Joe (Brown), and really all of them. All the guys from the top to bottom call him; and check in on his dad and us. Really just keeping the relationship tight from myself to the receiving coach to his family. A full-court press. They didn’t care that he was committed. They said we’re going to get this guy because he’s No. 1 on our board, and they believe Joshua is their dude, and they believed they had a shot at him, and look what happened.”
