THE GAME
• After capturing a thrilling 14-12 win over Virginia in four overtime periods on Oct. 29, the Hurricanes continue their first season under the direction of head coach Mario Cristobal on Sat., Nov. 5 vs. Florida State. Kickoff for the rivalry game, slated for broadcast on ABC, is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
• The game will be broadcast on ABC with Joe Tessitore (pxp), Greg McElroy (color) and Katie George (sideline) on the call. Joe Zagacki (pxp) and Don Bailey, Jr. (color) are in the 560 WQAM radio booth for their 21st season together. Josh Darrow manages sideline duties. Alfredo Alvarez (pxp) and Joe Martinez (color) will carry the game live on Radio Actualidad from Hard Rock Stadium. WVUM 90.5 FM will also broadcast the game.
THE SERIES
• The Hurricanes lead the all-time series with the Seminoles by a 35-31 margin, and have won four of the last five head-to-head games dating to 2017.
• In the Seminoles’ last trip to Hard Rock Stadium in 2020, the Hurricanes, then ranked No. 12, emerged victorious, topping their in-state rival, 52-10.
• Florida State leads the all-time series in games played in Miami, 20-18, while Miami leads, 16-11, in games played in Tallahassee in the rivalry series.
THE HURRICANES
• After capturing a 14-12 in 4OT win last time out at Virginia, Miami looks to build second-half momentum in a rivalry game vs. Florida State on Nov. 5.
• The Miami Hurricanes officially kicked off the Mario Cristobal era Sept. 3, when the Hurricanes topped Bethune-Cookman, 70-13, in their 2022 opener.
• WR Colbie Young became the sixth Hurricane to win ACC Player of the Week honors this year when he was recognized as ACC Receiver of the Week on Oct. 24. Young, who arrived from Lackawanna Junior College just before the season, has 23 catches, 317 yards and four TDs in his last four games.
• Cristobal, a double alum of the University, was named the 26th head coach in program history by school president Dr. Julio Frenk on Dec. 6, 2021.
• Cristobal returned home after spending the previous four seasons as head coach at Oregon. During his time in Eugene, the Ducks were the only team to play in a Power-5 conference championship game each of his final three years. He led the Ducks to a Rose Bowl win and two Pac-12 titles.
• Cristobal is one of only two active head coaches to have produced a top-10 pick in each of the last three drafts, joining only Alabama’s Nick Saban.
• The first-year Miami head coach drew widespread acclaim for the staff he assembled, which includes reigning Broyles Award winner Josh Gattis as offensive coordinator, longtime coordinator and SEC veteran Kevin Steele as defensive coordinator and Charlie Strong as co-DC/linebackers coach
• QB Tyler Van Dyke entered his first full year as a starter with high expectations after earning ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year honors as a second-year freshman in 2021. Named to nearly every major offensive award preseason watch list, Van Dyke became the first quarterback since Joe Burrow (2019) to record a streak of six straight 300-yard passing games with three-or-more TDs in each of those games.
• TE Will Mallory (Mackey Award), James Williams (Bednarik Award), P Lou Hedley (Ray Guy Award), K Andy Borregales (Lou Groza Award), OL Zion Nelson (Outland) and DL Leonard Taylor (Bronko Nagurski Trophy) were also among those recognized with preseason watch list selections.
• In addition to a talented group of returners, the Hurricanes feature a 2022 recruiting class that finished ranked among the top 15 nationally by every scouting service and a group of newcomers through the transfer portal that includes DL Mitchell Agude (UCLA), DL Jacob Lichtenstein (USC), DL Akheem Mesidor (West Virginia), DL Darrell Jackson (Maryland), DL Antonio Moultrie (UAB), LB Caleb Johnson (UCLA), DB Daryl Porter, Jr. (West Virginia), OL Logan Sagapolu (Oregon), OL Jonathan Denis (Oregon) WR Frank Ladson, Jr. (Clemson) and RB Henry Parrish (Ole Miss).
MIAMI LOOKING FOR RIVALRY GAME WIN
• Following a 14-12 win over Virginia in a four-overtime game last time out in Charlottesville, Miami returns to Hard Rock Stadium for its penultimate home contest of the season on Nov. 5 vs. Florida State.
• The Hurricanes hold a 35-31 all-time series lead over Florida State, and have won four of the last five matchups in the series dating back to 2017.
• The rivalry is Miami’s longest running consecutive series, with Saturday’s matchup making it 54 straight seasons with at least one game between the two programs (dating to 1969).
GARCIA MAKES FIRST CAREER START IN WIN
• Last time out, Miami topped Virginia, 14-12, in a game that took four overtime periods to complete in Charlottesville, Va., on Oct. 29.
• Making the first start of his career, QB Jake Garcia scored on a rushing play during the fourth overtime, diving for the pylon to give Miami its first overtime win since a 36-33 decision over Nebraska on Sept. 19, 2015.
• Miami’s defense totaled 11 tackles for loss and five sacks in the win. DL Leonard Taylor III paced the Hurricanes defense with four tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
• K Andy Borregales finished 4-for-4 on field goal attempts, with a long boot of 42 yards.
HURRICANES MATCH UP WITH SEMINOLES IN ANNUAL RIVALRY SERIES
• Miami continues its first season under the direction of head coach Mario Cristobal on Nov. 5 with its second-to-last home game of the season – a rivalry showdown with Florida State at 7:30 PM on ABC.
• Last time out on Oct. 29, Miami emerged victorious with a 14-12 decision over homestanding Virginia Charlottesville, Va. It was UM’s first win in overtime since a September 2015 decision over Nebraska.
• UM has an 35-31 all-time lead in its series with the Seminoles. The rivalry represents Miami’s longest running series; the Hurricanes have played FSU every year since 1969, a stretch of 54 straight seasons.
• Cristobal was named the 26th head coach in the history of the program on December 6, 2021 after spending the previous four years at the helm of the Oregon Ducks. Cristobal is a two-time UM alum.
• When he departed Eugene, Cristobal was the only Power-5 head coach to lead his team to three straight conference championship games from 2019-2021. He won two Pac-12 titles, delivered a Rose Bowl to the Ducks and is one of just two active coaches to produce a top-10 pick three straight years.
• Miami has won four of the last five vs. FSU, including a 52-10 win in the Seminoles’ last visit in 2020.
• UM’s game against FSU is also slated for broadcast on 560 WQAM, Radio Actualidad & WVUM 90.5.
A LOOK BACK: MIAMI TOPS UVA IN CHARLOTTESVILLE, 14-12, IN 4 OT
• Points were at a premium in Miami’s last road game, but the Hurricanes emerged victorious in the first-ever four-overtime game in UM history, a 14-12 decision over Virginia at Scott Stadium on Oct. 29.
• The Canes’ previous longest game in history came on Sept. 17, 2003 – a 3 OT, 36-30 win at Clemson.
• QB Jake Garcia, making the first start of his career in place of an injured QB Tyler Van Dyke, led the Hurricanes to victory with a diving score at the pylon in the fourth extra period to seal the victory.
• DL Leonard Taylor III delivered a dominant performance on defense, finishing with four tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. The Hurricanes totaled 11 tackles for loss and five sacks in the victory over Virginia.
• RB Henry Parrish, Jr., had his third 100-yard game of the year in the win, with 113 yards on 24 carries.
• One of Miami’s biggest contributors was K Andy Borregales, who connected on all four field goal attempts – including two in overtime – to clinch the win. He connected from 38, 20, 42 and 37 yards.
• The Hurricanes had not played in an overtime game since 2019 – a 28-21 loss to Georgia Tech at home. The team’s last win in overtime came in 2015, a 36-33 win over Nebraska at Hard Rock Stadium.
DEFENSE PLAYING AT HIGH LEVEL UNDER STEELE’S DIRECTION IN 2022
• The Hurricanes are ranked No. 24 in FBS in rushing defense (113.5) and rank No. 3 in the ACC in the same category. Only 26 FBS teams average under 115 rush yards allowed per game, including Miami.
• In addition to its strong rushing defense numbers, Miami is ranked No. 13 in all of FBS in first downs allowed on defense (124), No. 5 in team sacks (3.62) and No. 14 in tackles for loss (7.20) so far in 2022.
• Kevin Steele, a previous finalist for the Broyles Award honoring the nation’s top assistant coach, owns 38 years of coaching experience, including 13 in the SEC and 10 overall as a defensive coordinator.
• Among Miami’s top performers on defense have been DL Akheem Mesidor and LB Corey Flagg, Jr.
MIAMI RANKED NO. 22 IN PASSING OFFENSE UNDER BROYLES WINNER
• The Hurricanes are ranked No. 22 in passing offense in FBS, averaging 290.4 yards per game under the direction of offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, who won the 2021 Broyles Award while at Michigan.
• The Hurricanes rank No. 31 in FBS in offense first downs gained (195), No. 45 in total offense (422.6 yards per game), No. 28 in time of possession (31:54) and No. 45 in third down percentage (.424).
• Miami’s average of 290.4 passing yards per game is ranked third in the conference through nine weeks. The only two ACC schools above Miami are North Carolina (334.4) and Wake Forest (297.50).
YOUNG BALLING OVER LAST FOUR GAMES, EMERGING FOR OFFENSE
• WR Colbie Young has emerged as one of Miami’s go-to playmakers on offense after seeing limited action; over just the last four games, Young has totaled 23 catches, 317 yards and four touchdowns.
• The talented Young had six catches for 127 yards and two touchdowns vs. Duke. He became the first UM receiver with a multi-TD game in 2022 and was recognized as ACC Receiver of the Week.
• In addition, Young’s 71-yard scoring TD vs. Duke the longest play from scrimmage by a Cane in 2022.
• Before the Duke game, Young had nine grabs for 110 yards and a touchdown in the win at Virginia Tech. He became the first Miami player to post back-to-back games with 100-plus yards and at least one TD in back-to-back games since Mike Harley on 10/24/20 against Virginia and 11/6/20 at NC State.
• Prior to Young, the last Hurricane with consecutive 100-yard receiving outings was Charleston Rambo, who did so on 11/20/21 against Virginia Tech and 11/27/21 at Duke, the same two foes for Young.
• Young’s 71-yard play was the longest by a Hurricane since an 83-yard catch by Cam’Ron Harris on 9/25/21 against Central Connecticut State. In addition, it was the longest by a Miami player versus an FBS foe since a 76-yard reception by Brevin Jordan on 12/12/20 against North Carolina.
• Young transferred in from Lackawanna College in Pennsylvania, the same school that produced AllAmerican offensive lineman Bryant McKinnie. Young played high school football in Binghamton, N.Y.

TAYLOR NAMED ACC DL OF THE WEEK, HEADLINED DISRUPTIVE GAME
• Miami’s defense posted 11 tackles for loss and five sacks in a dominant showing last time at Virginia.
• With 3.62 sacks per game, the Hurricanes rank fifth in the country and second in the ACC. The lone ACC team with a better mark is Louisville (3.62). Just 20 teams are putting up even 3.0 sacks per contest and seven at 3.5. Miami is racking up 7.2 tackles for loss per game, ranking No. 14 in all of FBS.
• DL Akheem Mesidor and DL Leonard Talyor III are tied for the team lead in tackles for loss (8.0).
• Taylor III had a dominant performance of his own last time out, totaling 4.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in a 14-12 win at Virginia. It was only the sixth performance of at least 4.0 tackles for loss in a single game by a Miami Hurricane defender in the last seven seasons dating back to 2016.
• Taylor III, who goes by ‘L.T.’, is one of only four Power Five players—including the only one in the ACC—to post a game this season with at least 6 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 4.0 TFLs. He is among just three ACC players in the last two seasons with 6 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 4.0 TFLs in a single game, joining Florida State’s Jermaine Johnson II (11/13/21) and Georgia Tech’s Charlie Thomas (9/25/21)
PARRISH RECORDS CAREER-HIGH 113 YARDS LAST TIME OUT VS. CAVS
• Henry Parrish, Jr., recorded the third 100-yard game of his Miami career last time out at Virginia, rushing for a career-high 113 yards on a career-high 24 carries in the team’s 14-12 in 4 OTs.
• Parrish previous career high for yards was 111, set in 2021 vs. Arkansas when he was at Ole Miss.
• His performance a Virginia was just the 13th occurrence this season of an ACC player running for 110-plus yards in a game against a Power Five foe, including just the seventh such game on a road. He became the second player to rush for 100-plus yards against UVA, alongside Illinois’ Chase Brown.
• This was just the sixth time since the turn of the century (2000-present) a Miami Hurricane has hit 85 yards in each of the first three games of a season, as Parrish joined DeeJay Dallas (2019), Mark Walton (2016), Duke Johnson (2014), Lamar Miller (2011) and Frank Gore (2003) to accomplish the feat.
• Parrish who returned home to Miami after spending the first two years of his career at Ole Miss, rushed for 108 yards and three touchdowns on just 14 carries in the opener vs. Bethune-Cookman. The 108 yards marked the second-highest total of his career, while the three scores set a new mark.
• Parrish bested himself against Southern Miss, rushing for 109 yards with one touchdown in a 30-7 win on Sept. 10. Outside of Parrish, no other Miami player this century (2000-pres.) has opened his career as a Hurricane by rushing for 100-plus yards in the team’s opening two games of a season
• In his two years with the Rebels, the Miami native totaled more than 1,000 all-purpose yards. He was a four-star prospect who rushed for more than 4,600 yards in an illustrious high school career.
• When he decided to transfer to Miami, Parrish reunited with running backs coach Kevin Smith.
VAN DYKE INJURED VERSUS DUKE, MISSED FIRST START AT VIRGINIA
• Named to nearly every offensive award major preseason watch list, QB Tyler Van Dyke entered 2022 poised for another big season after putting together an ACC Rookie of the Year campaign in 2021.
• Van Dyke became the third Miami Hurricane to win both ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, joining Hurricanes QB Brad Kaaya (2014) and RB Duke Johnson (2012).
• The Glastonbury, Conn., native was injured in a home game versus Duke, exiting with an upper body injury. He did not start Miami’s last game at Virginia, ending a streak of 16 straight starts for Miami.
• Van Dyke took over starting duties three games into the season and ended the year by throwing for 2,931 yards, 25 passing touchdowns and just six interceptions. He completed 62.3 percent of passes.
A RAY GUY AWARD CANDIDATE, HEDLEY HONORED BY ACC AFTER VT
• A 2020 Ray Guy Award finalist and 2022 Preseason First Team All-ACC, Lou Hedley had an excellent first half of 2022 and was recognized with ACC Specialist of the Week honors on October 17.
• Through eight games, Hedley has Miami No. 11 in the nation in net punting at 42.00 yards per attempt
• The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder is averaging 43.3 yards per punt. He has three punts of 50 yards or more and has landed 15 punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line this season with only two touchbacks.
• A sixth-year redshirt senior, Hedley was a 2020 Ray Guy Award finalist and a 2021 semifinalist. In the former year, he was also an Associated Press Second Team All-American. He was named a semifinalist for the 2022 William V. Campbell Trophy honoring the sport’s top scholar athlete in late September.
• The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder from Mandurah, Australia, Hedley is a two-time Second Team All-ACC.
MESIDOR AMONG FBS LEADERS IN TACKLES FOR LOSS IN YEAR 1 AT UM
• After a dominant performance versus Virginia Tech at Lane Stadium on Oct. 15 that saw him total a teamhigh eight tackles and a career-best 3.5 sacks, DL Akheem Mesidor was named Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week and ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week on Oct. 17.
• Mesidor ranks No. 34 in the nation and No. 3 in ACC with an average of 0.71 sacks per game in 2022 (5.0).
• Mesidor became just the third ACC player over the last three seasons to record at least 3.5 sacks in a single game, including the first since Virginia’s Charles Snowden on 10/31/20 against North Carolina.
• Before Mesidor, the last ACC player to notch at least 3.5 sacks in a road game was also a Hurricane, as eventual first-round pick Gregory Rousseau tallied 4.0 on 11/2/19 in a victory at Florida State.
• Mesidor registered six tackles and two TFLs last time out vs. Duke. The prior week, he had eight tackles and 3.5 TFLs in the win at Virginia Tech. He is the 10th Hurricane in the last decade (2013-present) to log multiple games with six-plus tackles and multiple TFLs in the same season.
• Mesidor transferred to UM after totaling 70 tackles, 14.5 TFLs & 9.5 sacks in two years at West Virginia.
MALLORY CLOSING IN ON TIGHT END U RECORDS IN FINAL SEASON AT UM
• After the announcement of Mario Cristobal’s appointment as head coach at The U, a number of studentathletes elected to return for their final year of eligibility rather than train for the NFL Draft.
• One of Miami’s most important returnees was TE Will Mallory, who was among Miami’s top offensive performers a season ago. Mallory set career marks in catches (30), yards (347), starts (12) and longest reception (57) last year, while also matching his career mark for touchdowns in a season (four).
• The Mackey Award candidate had his best game yet in UM’s game vs. North Carolina: a career-high eight catches for a career-high 115 yards. The performance marked his first 100-yard game for UM.
• The veteran tight end, named to the Mackey Award honoring the nation’s top performer at the position, leads the Hurricanes in both receptions (28) and yards (371) and has started all eight games in 2022.
• Mallory needs 22 receptions, 398 yards and two touchdowns to set the Miami records for a tight end.
• The Jacksonville native’s accomplishments are even more impressive given the history of tight ends at Miami, an alumni group that includes Jeremy Shockey, Greg Olsen, Bubba Franks and Jimmy Graham.
KINCHENS AMONG TOP BALLHAWKS IN THE NATION IN SECOND YEAR
• DB Kamren Kinchens is No. 14 in the country and first in the ACC with three interceptions on the year. He is tied atop the ACC leaderboard with Pittsburgh’s Erick Hallett and NC State’s Aydan White.
RESTREPO ENJOYED FAST START, RETURNED LAST TIME OUT AT UVA
• WR Xavier Restrepo returned to action last time out at Virginia after missing five straight games due to a leg injury. Restrepo turned in the finest game of his Miami career in the opener, catching all five balls thrown his way to finish with 100 yards and a touchdown. It was the first 100-yard game of his career.
• Before suffering an injury prior to Miami’s game against Texas A&M, Xavier Restrepo was off to a fast start to begin 2022. The third-year sophomore wide receiver was averaging 86.0 yards per game, which was good for the fourth-best mark in the ACC. Only eight players in the league had 60-plus yards per contest. At the time of his injury, Restrepo was also tied for fourth in ACC with 11 catches.
• Restrepo totaled 24 catches for 373 yards and two touchdowns as a second-year freshman in 2021.
