The 6-4 Miami Hurricanes have struggled since ACC play began, going 2-4 over the last six games with the two wins in overtime. And off a hard-fought seven-point loss to No. 4 ranked FSU last weekend, the Canes are now set to face another top 10 team today in 9-1 No. 9 Louisville.

THE GAME

• Coming off a 27-20 loss last time out at Florida State, the Hurricanes continue their second season under the direction of head coach Mario Cristobal on Sat., November 18 with a Senior Day showdown against Louisville. Kickoff for the game is set for 12 p.m. from Hard Rock Stadium.

• The game will be broadcast on ABC with Sean McDonough (pxp), Greg McElroy (color) & Molly McGrath (sideline) on the call. Joe Zagacki (pxp) & Don Bailey, Jr. (color) are in the 560 WQAM booth for the 22nd season. americaradio 1260 AM and WVUM 90.5 FM will also broadcast Saturday.

• Several seniors will be recognized before the game, and legendary QB Gino Torretta’s #13 jersey will be retired during halftime ceremonies Saturday.

THE SERIES

• Miami leads the all-time series against Louisville, 11-3-1. The Hurricanes won, 47-34, in the last matchup between the two teams at Louisville in 2020.

• In the Cardinals’ last visit to Hard Rock Stadium in 2019, the Hurricanes emerged with a 52-27 win. Miami has won back-to-back games vs. UofL.

• The Canes are 6-0-1 all-time against Louisville in games played in Miami. UM was Louisville’s first-ever football opponent as a member of the ACC.

THE HURRICANES

• Miami continues Year 2 of the Mario Cristobal Era on Nov. 18 when it hosts Louisville for its final home game of 2023. Kickoff for Senior Day is 12 p.m.

• The Hurricanes are coming off a 27-20 loss to Florida State in Tallahassee on Nov. 11. QB Emory Williams made the first road start of his career

• Miami had possession of the ball with less than five minutes remaining down one score, but an interception on the final drive sealed a Seminoles’ win.

• WR Jacolby George was named ACC Receiver of the Week for the second time this year; he compiled 153 yards with two touchdowns against FSU.

• Another freshman – DL Rueben Bain, Jr. – ranks first among defensive lineman in sacks with 6.5 and is tied for sixth in the ACC in the category.

• Miami is looking for its second top-25 win of the season Saturday; the Canes picked up an impressive win over #23/#22 Texas A&M, 48-33, on Sept. 9.

• Cristobal, a double alum of the University, was named the 26th head coach in program history by school president Dr. Julio Frenk on Dec. 6, 2021.

• Cristobal returned home after spending the previous four seasons as head coach at Oregon, where he won two Pac-12 titles and captured a Rose Bowl.

• Cristobal is regarded as one of the nations top recruiters, and in his first recruiting cycle as Miami head coach, the Hurricanes signed the best class in program history according to the 247Sports Composite; it was the top-ranked class in the Atlantic Coast Conference and the top class in the state.

• The second-year Miami head coach hired Shannon Dawson from the University of Houston as the team’s new offensive coordinator and Lance Guidry from Marshall as the team’s new defensive coordinator entering 2023. In total, there are new faces in seven of 10 assistant coach roles; in addition to Dawson and Guidry, Cristobal hired Derek Nicholson (from Louisville) to coach linebackers, Tim Harris, Jr., (UCF) to coach running backs, Kevin Beard (Toledo) to coach wide receivers and elevated both Jason Taylor (defensive line) and Cody Woodiel (tight ends) from analyst roles.

• After a breakout season where he earned All-America honors, Kam Kinchens was named to the watch list for nearly every major defensive award, including the Bednarik Award, the Nagurski Trophy and the Thorpe Award. He was also named a Preseason All-American by the Associated Press.

• TE Elijah Arroyo (Mackey Award), K Andy Borregales (Lou Groza Award), OL Javion Cohen (Outland Trophy), OL Matt Lee (Rimington Award) and DL Leonard Taylor (Bednarik) were also among those recognized with preseason watch list selections for major awards entering 2023.

• The Canes feature a 2023 transfer portal class that ranked among the best in FBS; it includes starters OL Javion Cohen (Alabama), Matt Lee (UCF) and LB Francisco Mauigoa (Washington State), DB Jaden Davis (Oklahoma) and others like DB Davonte Brown (UCF) and RB Ajay Allen (Nebraska).

GEORGE COMPILES BIG GAME VS. FSU

• WR Jacolby George was recognized as ACC Receiver of the Week after another impressive performance, this time vs. Florida State last time out on Nov. 11.

• George totaled a career-best 153 yards in the loss against the rival Seminoles, finishing with five catches and two touchdowns at Doak Campbell Stadium.

• Monday’s recognition marked the second time this season George has been named ACC Receiver of the Week; the junior wideout was also honored after a three-touchdown performance in a win over Texas A&M on Sept. 9

BAIN DOMINATING IN FRESHMAN SEASON

• One of the biggest reasons for Miami’s strong defense in 2023 has been the dominance of freshman DL Rueben Bain, Jr., who was named ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week for the second straight week on Oct. 30.

• Bain leads Miami in sacks (6.5) and is tied for sixth in the ACC in the category.

• Bain was named ACC DL of the Week and ACC Rookie of the Week on Oct. 23. He was named a Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year semifinalist on Oct. 31.

• The freshman standout, who was a top-ranked recruit, has an older brother on staff who serves as a graduate assistant (Reggie).

HURRICANES HOST #9/#9 UofL ON SENIOR DAY AT HARD ROCK STADIUM

• Miami continues its second season under the direction of head coach Mario Cristobal on Sat., Nov. 18 with its final home game of 2023 and penultimate regular season game vs. #9/#9 Louisville (12 p.m.)

• Coming off a 27-20 loss at #4/#4 Florida State last time out, Miami is looking for its third straight victory over the Cardinals. Miami topped UofL at Hard Rock Stadium in 2019 and on the road in 2020.

• Miami has defeated Louisville in the last two games of this series, scoring at least 45 points and recording zero turnovers in each matchup. That is tied for the longest such streak by the Hurricanes against a single opponent over the past 25 seasons (2011-12 vs. Duke, 2001-02 vs. Syracuse).

• UM leads the all-time series against Louisville, 11-3-1, including a near perfect 6-0-1 mark in Miami. . The Hurricanes have won back-to-back games in the series; the two teams have met three times since Louisville joined the ACC in 2014. UM was the Cardinals’ first-ever football opponent in the conference.

• Joining Cristobal on the sidelines in 2023 are seven new faces in full-time assistant coach roles, including both coordinators – offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson from the University of Houston and defensive coordinator Lance Guidry from Marshall – who are both in their first seasons at The U.

• Miami’s game vs. the Cardinals is also slated for broadcast on 560 WQAM and americaradio 1260 AM.

LAST TIME OUT: WILLIAMS MAKES FIRST ROAD START IN TALLAHASSEE

• QB Emory Williams made the first road start of his career last time out, but exited with a left arm injury in the fourth quarter on Miami’s final drive of an eventual 27-20 loss to #4/#4 Florida State.

• Williams threw a career-long 85-yard touchdown pass to WR Jacolby George in the fourth quarter to help jumpstart a comeback effort. George was named ACC Receiver of the Week with a career-high 153 yards and two touchdowns. FSU had not surrendered a passing score at home in 2023 prior to UM.

• LB Francisco Mauigoa tied for the lead with nine tackles to go with 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.

GUIDRY’S UNIT IMPRESSING IN YEAR 1 AS UM DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

• Lance Guidry, who was named defensive coordinator at Miami in February 2023, spent the previous two seasons as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Marshall University in 2021 and 2022.

• Guidry has made his impact felt in his first season as the defensive coordinator in Coral Gables. Among teams in the ACC, the Hurricanes rank No. 3 in total defense (No. 19 in FBS), No. 1 in sacks (No. 7 in FBS), No. 2 in tackles for loss (No. 10 in FBS) and No. 1 in rushing defense (No. 7 in FBS).

• The Canes are one of just 20 teams in all of FBS allowing fewer than 315.0 yards per game in 2023.

• The Hurricanes allowed the Seminoles to record just 57 net rushing yards last week, their fifth time holding their opponent to 60 or fewer net rushing yards this season. That is tied for the most such games in the FBS this season, along with only two other teams: Air Force and Nebraska.

• Miami had held its opponents under 100 rushing yards its first five games of the season – a streak that ended at North Carolina Oct. 14. It was the Hurricanes’ longest such streak to begin a year since 2006.

JOE MOORE-RECOGNIZED OL ONE OF 11 TO HAVE STARTED SAME FIVE

• One of the most important components to Miami’s start has been the impressive play of its offensive line. The Hurricanes have started LT Jalen Rivers, LG Javion Cohen, C Matt Lee, RG Anez Cooper and RT Francis Mauigoa for all 10 of its games, and the group has been pivotal to UM’s success so far.

• The group was recognized for its outstanding play when it was selected to the midseason honor roll for the Joe Moore Award, which annually honors the top-performing offensive unit in college football.

• Entering Week 12, the Hurricanes were one of only 11 FBS groups to have started the same five players.

• Miami’s entire interior line (Cohen, Lee, Cooper) was named to the PFF Team of the Week on Oct. 30.

• In a win vs. Clemson, the group had perhaps its best performance yet. With a freshman QB making his first start, the group did not allow a sack and helped total 211 rushing yards against an elite defense.

• Cooper was named ACC Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week as well as Outland Trophy National Player of the Week after a dominant game vs. Texas A&M, where he graded out as Miami’s top lineman.

• Lee was named a candidate for the Rimington Trophy, honoring the top center, after a standout career at UCF. Cohen transferred from Alabama and was was named an Outland Trophy candidate.

HURRICANES STARTED FIVE TRUE FRESHMEN ON ROAD VS. SEMINOLES

• Miami’s 2023 recruiting class included 15 players ranked in the ESPN 300, including one of the top five, two in the top 20 and six in the top 100. The Hurricanes signed two players who were consensus “five-star” players by every service – Miami had three five-star signees in the last eight classes total.

• An impressive five members of that group started last time out against Florida State: DL Rueben Bain, Jr. DB Damari Brown, RB Mark Fletcher, Jr., OL Francis Mauigoa and QB Emory Williams.

GEORGE ENJOYING BREAKOUT SEASON AS STARTER AT WIDE RECEIVER

• One of Miami’s top performers on offensive this season has been WR Jacolby George, who has blossomed into one of the conference’s best performers in his first year as a full-time starter.

• George totaled 313 yards in his first two seasons (2021, 2022) but has a team-leading 707 yards in 2023. He also leads Miami in touchdown receptions (7) and ranks second in total receptions with 46.

• The Lauderhill, Fla., native has been recognized as ACC Receiver of the Week twice this year, following games vs. Texas A&M and Florida State. In his last game against FSU, he became the third UM player this century to record at least 150 receiving yards and multiple receiving TDs on five or fewer catches in a game, joining Phillip Dorsett (2014 vs. Arkansas State) and Santana Moss (2000 vs. Virginia Tech).

• Entering Miami’s Sept. 9 matchup with Texas A&M, George had just one career touchdown catch in two-plus seasons. He had three alone vs A&M, becoming the first Cane to have three touchdown grabs in the same game since WR Leonard Hankerson did so against at Clemson on Oct. 2, 2010.

• George is one of four players in the ACC to have at least seven touchdown catches entering Week 12.

• George put together only the third game of three receiving touchdowns by an ACC player this year.

BAIN SHINING IN YEAR 1, IS FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR SEMIFINALIST

• One of Miami’s most impressive breakout players of the season has been true freshman DL Rueben Bain, Jr. Bain was named ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week and Rookie of the Week on Oct. 23 after a dominant game vs. Clemson. He repeated as ACC DL of the Week honoree on Oct. 30.

• Bain was named a semifinalist for the Shaun Alexander National Freshman of the Year Award.

• A Miami native, Bain leads all UM players and is tied for sixth in the ACC with 6.5 sacks. He’s second on the team in tackles for loss (8.5) and has totaled 32 tackles, which is tops among defensive linemen.

• In a 2OT win over Clemson, Bain had the best performance of his young career – eight tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble. Bain was also named 247Sports True Freshman of the Week and hauled in Shaun Alexander Award Freshman of the Week recognition for his dominant game vs. Clemson.

• He outdid himself against Virginia, finishing with 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and seven tackles.

• According to PFF, Bain has more credited quarterback pressures this year (36) than many of the players considered to be the top defensive line prospects in college football ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft; there are only 33 players in all of FBS that have been credited with at least 35 pressures by PFF.

• Bain’s older brother, Reggie, is a graduate assistant coach working with the offensive line on UM staff.

MAUIGOA DELIVERING DOMINANT YEAR IN MIDDLE OF MIAMI DEFENSE

• Linebacker Francisco “Kiko” Mauigoa has been one of UM’s best performers since arriving after spending the first two seasons of his career at Washington State. Mauigoa has started all 10 games.

• Mauigoa ranks second on the team in total tackles with 54 and leads the Hurricanes with 15 tackles for loss. He also is tied for the team lead with 6.5 sacks, and has one interception and two forced fumbles.

• Mauigoa ranks first in the ACC in total tackles for loss and also ranks No. 7 in FBS in the category.

“FOURTH QUARTER PROGRAM” EFFECT: UM AMONG TOP IN 4Q SCORING

• When Mario Cristobal arrived to Miami in 2021, one of his first hires was strength & conditioning coordinator Aaron Feld. The duo’s “fourth quarter” spring workout program has become a staple.

• In games involving only FBS teams across the country, the Hurricanes rank No. 20 in the nation in fourth quarter scoring at 9.0 points per game in 2023. Through its first two games in wins over the Aggies and the RedHawks, Miami outscored its opponents by a 31-7 margin in the final frame.

KINCHENS JOINS ELITE COMPANY WITH 10TH CAREER PICK AT NC STATE

• DB Kam Kinchens became only the 12th player in Miami Football history to reach double-digit interceptions for a career when he recorded a pick in Miami’s 20-6 loss at NC State in Raleigh on Nov. 4.

• Kinchens is the first Hurricane since the iconic Sean Taylor (2001-03) to record at least 10 picks in a career. Taylor finished his career with 14. Before Sean Taylor reached 10, the previous player to reach the plateau was Ed Reed, who had 21 interceptions from 1998-2001. 21 still represents Miami’s career record.

BRASHARD ONE OF NATION’S MOST DANGEROUS, IS 3RD IN FBS IN KOR

• Though he has only had 16 returns in his 10 games, WR Brashard Smith has made them count, ranking third in the nation in kickoff return average averaging 31.1 yards per return so far this year.

• Smith’s 98-yard kickoff return TD vs. Texas A&M was his first kickoff return for a touchdown of his career

• Smith had an 80-yard run that resulted in a touchdown in Miami’s 2OT win over Clemson on Oct. 21.

• The junior speedster ranks No. 1 on Miami in all-purpose yards this season, including a season-high 168 at North Carolina. He totaled 150 yards in Miami’s 2OT win vs. Clemson and 66 last time vs. NC State.

BACK-TO-BACK OVERTIME Ws A RARITY IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL, AT UM

• Miami won back-to-back games in overtime this season, emerging victorious over Clemson in two overtimes on Oct. 21 and beating Virginia in OT on Oct. 28. It marked the first time in the history of Miami where the Canes played two overtime games in the same season – let alone back-to-back.

• UM became the first team since Georgia Southern in 2019 to win overtime games in back-to-back outings. UM was the first Power-5 team to do it since Northwestern won three such games in 2017.

“HURRICANE” BAIN ONE OF JUST 11 WITH MULTIPLE SACK-GAMES VS. P-5

• DL Rueben Bain, Jr. recorded back-to-back games of multiple sacks against Clemson (Oct. 21) and Virginia (Oct. 28), helping lead the Hurricanes to back-to-back overtime wins. Bain is one of just 11 players in the nation to have multiple individual performances of at least two sacks in a game this year.

• Bain, a semifinalist for the Shaun ander Freshman of the Year, is the only freshman on the list.

TORRETTA’S #13 TO BE RETIRED DURING HALFTIME VERSUS LOUISVILLE

• The University of Miami announced that the Hurricanes football program will retire legendary quarterback Gino Torretta’s No. 13 jersey. The jersey retirement ceremony will take place at halftime.

• The consensus first-team All-American capped an incredible 1992 season by becoming the second Hurricane to win the Heisman Trophy, while also earning the Maxwell Award, the Davey O’Brien Award, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Walter Camp Player of the Year, the Chevrolet Offensive Player of the Year, the Toyota Leadership Award and the Hitachi/CFA Scholar Athlete of Year Award.

• Two football players – WR Michael Redding III and DL Chantz Williams – currently wear No. 13 and will have a commemorative patch on their jerseys honoring Torretta. Miami’s other retired jerseys are No. 10 (George Mira), No. 14 (Vinny Testaverde), No. 42 (Jim Dooley) and No. 89 (Ted Hendricks).

ONE OF THE BEST FBS DUOS: KINCHENS AND WILLIAMS A TALENTED PAIR

• Two of Miami’s closest teammates on and off the field are two of its best players in safety pairing Kam Kinchens and James Williams. The two third-year players make up a highly talented duo.

• Williams delivered a dominant outing in UM’s win over Virginia totaling a team-high and career-high 13 tackles in Miami’s overtime win over Virginia. He leads the Hurricanes with 60 total tackles this season.

• Kinchens was similarly dominant against the Cavaliers; the standout was named ACC Defensive Back of the Week after recording the second pick-six of his career. Kinchens returned the pick 29 yards for a TD.

• Kinchens recorded the 10th pick of his career at NC State – just the 12th UM player to reach the mark.

• Kinchens, an All-American a season ago, was named to the All-ACC First Team in 2022 after having 59 total tackles and a team-high six interceptions. He is a member of UM’s leadership council.

• Kinchens average interceptions-per-game mark (0.30) is the fourth-best career mark in all of FBS.

• The Miami native is one of only 11 players in all of FBS to have recorded 9 career interceptions.

• Another impactful player in his own right, the 6-foot-5 Williams made 10 starts and ranked second on the team with 58 tackles a season ago. Both players are South Florida natives and best friends.
