Another update: Miami (Fla.) Northwestern 2027 four-star wide receiver Nick Lennear will be among the top prospects on hand for the UM-FSU game and he shares his perspective.

Although Pembroke Pines (Fla.) West Broward 2028 cornerback A’mir Sears may only be midway through his freshman year, that has not stopped a handful of programs from offering the rising talent, including the Miami Hurricanes. Find out where things stand at this early point.

Plus Tyrone (Ga.) Sandy Creek four-star 2026 running back Amari Latimer wasn’t able to make his scheduled trip to Miami three weeks ago for the Hurricanes’ conference opener against Virginia Tech, but the 6-foot, 200-pound back has already started planning a makeup visit to Coral Gables. Find out about that.

And, as always, stay tuned today for any news that may come up.

MESSAGE BOARD POST OF THE DAY

A Closer Analysis Of The Defense … Posted by advarkas

The Canes’ Defense currently ranks T-56th in Scoring Defense (22.57 PPG), giving up an average of 39.00 points in the last 3 games, as opposed to an average of 10.25 points in the first 4 games.

Scoring Offenses:

Florida, T-49th at 31.0 PPG; Defense gave up 17 points
FAMU, (n/a FCS school although Defense only gave up 9 points)
Ball State, T-87th at 25.2 PPG; Defense gave up 0 points
USF, T-87th at 25.2 PPG; Defense gave up 15 points

Virginia Tech, T-40th at 32.1 PPG; Defense gave up 34 points
Cal, T-95th at 24.0 PPG; Defense gave up 38 points
Louisville, T-20th at 37.3 PPG; Defense gave up 45 points

So, in the first 4 games, the Defense held opponents to less than their season averages for scoring (to date), and in the last 3 games, the Defense has allowed opposing offenses to score more than their season averages (to date), most notably with Cal.

Note that Florida State is SECOND TO LAST in Scoring Offense – 132 out of 133 at 15.0 PPG (only Houston is worse at 13.7 PPG).

Interestingly, the Canes rank:
12th in 3rd Down Conversion % (.299)
T-23 in 4th Down Conversion % (.700)
T-10th in Sacks (3.29 per game)
14th in Tackles for Loss (7.6 per game)
8th in Rushing Defense (92.2 YPG)
21st in Total Defense (301.1 YPG)

So this Canes Defense is solid in SEVERAL categories.

The two main issues I see with this Defense, statistically speaking, is (obviously) Pass Defense at 214.0 YPG (61st), and surprisingly Red Zone Defense at .820% (T-60th). Compounding the Defense’s problems are the fact that in the last 3 games, this Defense has given up TD plays of 55 yards (run), 57 yards (pass), 66 yards (pass), and 43 yards (run), on top of a 100 yard kickoff return. The Defense also gave up a long TD run in the Florida Game. So big plays have plagued this Defense.

Schemes?
Talent Level?
Player Development?

Probably a combination of all three as to the Secondary, and it would be a lot more disasterous without Powell’s 22 tackles and 3 INTs to provide some playmaking on the back end.

If this Defense can’t regain some early season form against Florida State, then we are in some serious shvt. Can’t be “Cam-Ward-Hero-Ball” all season, even though we expected to see mostly shootouts.

MIAMI HURRICANES QUOTE OF THE DAY

Oct 19, 2024; Louisville, Kentucky, USA; Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal talks with offensive lineman Anez Cooper (73) during the first half against the Louisville Cardinals at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jamie Rhodes-Imagn Images

“There’s a lot of confidence and trust on the sidelines because of what has been worked on out Greentree. There was a lot of energy and enthusiasm throughout the entire game. We were a little bit healthier and those guys certainly made a difference. The guys are eager to get better, clean up mistakes, go forward and find a way to be 1-0 each week. It’s always about getting better, especially in the fundamentals if you want to be 1-0.”
