WHAT’S UP TODAY

First up this morning in your Miami Hurricanes news?

Stay tuned today for coaches Mario Cristobal, Lance Guidry and Shannon Dawson sharing their thoughts today off the bye weekend as Miami tries to recover from its loss at Georgia Tech.

And this morning we have plenty of content for you.

It starts with Gary Ferman’s column taking a closer look at what lies ahead for this Miami Hurricanes team and what needs to happen coming off a bye.

Plus we have your inside looks at the offensive and defensive performances so far this year with an assist from Pro Football Focus. That shows some interesting underlying issues … and also points to what has gotten Miami to this point of the season.

In recruiting? Our coverage starts with an overview of where things stand heading into signing day in a couple of weeks.

And we have plenty more stories for you.

Don’t miss our latest Inside The Lines feature, as we catch up with Leo (Ind.) four-star 2025 tight end and Miami commit Brock Schott. Learn all about this future Cane.

There’s plenty more recruiting updates for you as well, starting with our Live From The Crib story featuring Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage four-star 2025 receiver Malachi Toney. He rewrote the Patriots history books in their 40-6 win over Jensen Beach Friday night.

Don’t miss our update with five-star Oregon receiver commit Dallas Wilson, either. Miami remains in it as the Early Signing Period approaches.

Miami’s in a good spot with Boca Raton (Fla.) West Boca four-star 2026 running back Javian Mallory, who has a lot of programs chasing him.

Tampa (Fla.) Tampa Bay Tech four-star 2026 running back Javari Barnett hasn’t had the opportunity to attend a Miami home game so far this year, but that hasn’t inhibited the No. 159 overall prospect’s interest in the Hurricanes.

Another update: Miami running backs coach Matt Merritt offered Moultrie (Ga.) Colquitt County four-star running back Ty’Jaevian “Jae” Lamar Friday following a stop at the No. 126 overall prospect and No. 13 running back’s school. We have that update with Lamar for you.

We also catch up with New Albany (Miss.) four-star 2026 offensive tackle Emanuel Tucker. He was high on Miami immediately after his visit to South Florida in late October, and as the weeks have gone by his enthusiasm for the Hurricanes hasn’t dwindled.

We have an update with Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna three-star defensive tackle Donta Simpson. The commit updates his status coming off injury.

Don’t miss what Miami (Fla.) Southridge 2026 interior offensive lineman Ryan Miret is saying. He’s still been one of the Hurricanes’ top offensive line targets early in his cycle and will be at the game this weekend.

And updating his status is IMG Academy four-star linebacker commit Gavin Nix, who has had schools like Oregon and Michigan maintain communication with him.

Another commit we talk with is Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna four-star cornerback Chris Ewald, so don’t miss his thoughts with signing day fast approaching.

Plus Tampa (Fla.) Carrollwood Day four-star 2026 prospect DJ Williams is already receiving early attention from Miami’s staff and shares where things stand in his picture.

There was the basketball team winning by 30 against Coppin State, and we have your recap of that, too.

And, as always, stay tuned today for any news that may come up.

MESSAGE BOARD POST OF THE DAY

A Lot Of Football Left, And A Lot To Prove … Posted by advarkas

At 9-1 with what we have seen on Defense, Defensive players are not properly developing, there is a Defensive talent deficiency, and the Defense overall has regressed. I’d say to date, Guidry deserves to be fired. But we can fire coaches mid-season all we want; nobody is going anywhere for at least another month…

I’m not sure there is anything that can be done with this Defense. At 9-1, top-10 ranking, and the ACC CG appearance hanging in the balance with two winnable games left on the schedule, I doubt Mario is going to instruct Guidry to do anything radical from a schematic/strategy standpoint. The bye comes at a much needed time for self-reflection, intensified practices both this week and next week, and captains rallying the players’ morale.

Best bet is that the Defense plays more along the lines of what we saw throughout the Florida State and Duke-2nd Half games, than what we have seen for most of the last 6 games. Lack of a pass rush to protect the back end of the Defense, combined with piss poor Cornerback/Safety play, have completely exposed this Defense. Fingers crossed for a few more games, but as fans don’t quit, because these players are still playing hard albeit not both smart and good enough.

Looking ahead at next year, this Defense needs:
– complete overhaul in the scheme (whether that is Guidry doing a 180 or a new DC)
– Bain gaining 15-25 lbs and moving insdie to DT
– getting a high caliber, quality veteran safety in the Portal
– landing 2-3 4/5 star stud edge rushers who can immediately play and be impactful
– improving the LB quality play. Kiko and LB company have been hugely underwhelming this year

“I have the mindset that I just have to do as much as I can to help the team. Anything I can do on offense, defense, or special teams, I’m going to do whatever the coach asks, and I just really enjoy both sides of the ball.”
