WHAT’S UP TODAY

First up this morning in your Miami Hurricanes news?

We continue our annual 30 for 30 countdown with the team’s top 30 players who played 30 or more reps. Check out our latest player on the countdown: No. 7 Elija Lofton.

Make sure to also check out publisher Gary Ferman’s mailbag, as he’ll be answering all your Miami Hurricanes football questions as off-season conditioning work has begun and the team gets ready to begin spring practice in March.

To wrap up the team news, we take a look at whether 2025 will be Mario Cristobal’s last big outflux/influx of players.

In recruiting, new Miami defensive backs coach Zac Etheridge was on the recruiting trail last week and has made a strong early impression on several prospects in South Florida and beyond. We catch up with a pair of local prospects: Pembroke Pines (Fla.) West Broward athlete A’mir Sears and Miami (Fla.) Norland 2027 cornerback Kenton Dopson, who talks about Etheridge and more.

Lastly, with the dust settled from the Reese’s Senior and East-West Shrine Bowl, we take a look at which former Hurricanes elevated their stock the most.

And, as always, stay tuned today for any news that may come up.

MESSAGE BOARD POST OF THE DAY

Elijah Arroyo is a dog… by  DreadLock

Elijah is generating plenty of buzz amongst NFL Draft experts after a strong showing during the Senior Bowl practices this week. This year he led all NCAA tight ends while averaging 16.9 yards per catch. His 9.1 yards after catch per reception also led all NCAA tight ends.

Arroyo hit a top speed of 21.8 miles per hour during a 74-yard catch and run for a touchdown against Georgia Tech in 2024. Only “six” players at any position in the NFL recorded a higher max ball carrier speed during the 2024 season.

Since the 2000 NFL Draft, the Canes have produced five first round picks at tight end: Bubba Franks, Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow Jr., Greg Olsen, and David Njoku.

The program has also produced ten draft selections outside of the first round since 2000, including: Jimmy Graham, Will Mallory, Brevin Jordan, Chris Herndon, Clive Walford, Richard Gordon, Dedrick Epps, Kevin Everett, Mondriel Fulcher, and Richard Mercier.

ESPN – “Elijah Arroyo (Miami) was the biggest winner of the week, potentially moving into the first round after entering the week outside my top 50. He showcased his awesome agility, which he combined with his size (6-foot-4, 251 pounds) and length to win in 50-50 situations.”

Pro Football Focus – “In what’s a wide-open race for TE3 in the NFL Draft behind Penn State’s Tyler Warren and Michigan’s Colston Loveland, Arroyo could have the inside track after a strong performance at the Senior Bowl. He has excellent athleticism at 6-foot-5, 251 pounds and was a nightmare for opposing defensive backs to handle. His 99.7 receiving grade against single coverage this past season stood in the 99th percentile among FBS tight ends.”

Daniel Jeremiah
 – “I had Arroyo near the bottom of my Top 50 rankings coming into the week, but I think he’s going to leave the Senior Bowl with some first-round buzz. We all knew about his size and speed before he arrived in Mobile — he showed that during his breakout season with Miami in 2024. The thing that stood out to me in practice this week was his route polish. He blocked well, too. The arrow is pointing all the way up here.”

MIAMI HURRICANES QUOTE OF THE DAY

“It was great getting back on campus and being able to be around the coaching staff and chatting it up,” Sears told CaneSport. “Getting love from your hometown program feels great.”
