WHAT’S UP TODAY

First up this morning in your Miami Hurricanes news?

Stay tuned later early this afternoon as we’ll have your press conference with new Miami basketball coach Jai Lucas as he looks to build the program back up. Over the weekend we took a look at his basketball coaching pedigree, with a legendary dad John II who we caught up with plus his brother John III having major hoops roots. So don’t miss that inside look, including what the family has in common with Kobe, LeBron, Rick Barry and Coach L.

And, of course there was Friday’s final spring practice before break, and we had you fully covered. There was video of the day’s work, a photo gallery, news and notes from the practice field and post-practice updates with defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman and players. So don’t miss all that coverage.

And this morning we are taking a look at some of the storylines from Week 1 of drills and breaking it down as hype or reality.

And in recruiting there’s plenty more news for you starting with our story on the “surprise” that was coming from Tampa (Fla.) Armwood four-star 2026 cornerback Jaelen Waters … and then what that nice surprise was for Miami … with a commitment. We had you covered on that front including an analysis of what it means for UM to have landed him.

Another update: Miami head coach Mario Cristobal has long held ties to the Fitzpatrick family after recruiting Minkah to Alabama in the mid-2010s and knowing his younger brother, Justice, since he was a small child. Friday, Miami hosted the fully Fitzpatrick family on campus again as the Hurricanes keep the heat up on Justice. We have that update.

Plus on Friday UM hosted Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna four-star running back Derrek Cooper. Over the last few months, the coveted ball carrier has been no stranger to Coral Gables, but this time he got a preview of the 2025 Hurricanes. Find out about that.

More for you:

Carrollton (Ga.) four-star 2026 cornerback Dorian Barney updated things following his trip to Coral Gables, as did Orlando (Fla.) The First Academy three-star 2026 safety Danny Odem.

Miami (Fla.) Norland 2027 cornerback Kenton Dopson was back in Coral Gables last week to check out Miami for the first time this spring and share shis thoughts.

Port Saint Lucie (Fla.) John Carroll four-star offensive tackle Sean Tatum is still in the early stages of his recruitment, but Miami is “definitely” among teams capturing his attention early, and he will visit this month. Find out about that.

Also check out our coach’s take on recent Miami commit, Mineral City (Ohio) Tuscarawas Valley four-star offensive tackle Ben Congdon.

On Friday morning, the Miami Hurricanes welcomed Richmond (Va.) Hermitage four-star defensive back Andre Clarke to Coral Gables for the second time this year. Since visiting Miami in January, the 2026 prospect has been eager to get another look at the Canes and did just that.

Plus Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy four-star wide receiver Osani Gayles is one of the top prospects in the 2027 class with over a dozen Power 4 offers, and UM is now on that list. Heshres his thoughts.

There was the baseball weekend series against Connecticut, too, as well as the hoops season finale, so you can read about how those games went.

And, as always, stay tuned today for any news that may come up.

MESSAGE BOARD POST OF THE DAY

With our Offensive line … Posted by SeanTaylorsGhost

Think ‘93 Cowboys. This will be a force of Nature. Like a Hurricane. Imagine Elija lofton as Moose Johnston. The right side of lines are going to cave.

MIAMI HURRICANES QUOTE OF THE DAY

Shannon Dawson

“It used to be you wanted five (QBs on the roster), now it’s probably three to four. We are very fortunate, our quarterback room is really talented. I do think it’s very hard to keep guys. Four is probably a number that if you have four, you better feel lucky. Three is probably more realistic.”
