WHAT’S UP TODAY

First up this morning in your Miami Hurricanes news?

Don’t miss our roundtable discussion of who will emerge as Miami’s No. 3 receiving threat behind Xavier Restrepo and Jacolby George. There are some differences of opinion there.

CaneSport also continues its State of The U series with a closer position by position look, unfiltered and objective, based on what Miami has returning, the projections and whether this will be an improved unit or not. Today’s focus: Linebacker, where a starting battle looms and there are some depth question marks.

There’s also our continuing analysis of the top 50 roster players, giving insight onto this team’s talent level and depth. Check out our closer look at No. 4, Xavier Restrepo. Can he put up another 1,000 yard season with Cam Ward at QB and a lot of offensive mouths to feed?

In recruiting? With Miami grabbing a handful of commitments off of June’s official visits, we take a look at where things stand with some other key targets and who could be next to come off the board in the Canes’ favor.

We also catch up with Fort Myers (Fla.) four-star 2026 defensive lineman Kendall Guervil. He visited Miami on Sunday, working out for coaches at the camp, so don’t miss where things stand there now.

Plus there’s an update with Gulf Shores (Ala.) four-star linebacker JaMichael Garrett. He has felt the love from the Canes and shares where things stand in his recruiting picture.

MESSAGE BOARD POST OF THE DAY

Thoughts on our depth … Posted by Old Cane

Unlike the old days, it’s difficult to stockpile depth these today. 5-star and high 4-star kids want to play early (which Mario did last year) or they’ll hit the transfer portal. This is especially true of positions where technique and talent (not size and strength) determine success.

On the flip side, you can stockpile OL and DL players with skills that need developing and body types that need building. These 18 yr. old kids will learn from practice that they have a ways to go before they can succeed against grown men. Most likely, they will stick if they feel Miami is developing their talents and that they see a road map to becoming a starter. Mirabal and Cristabol have a solid record with these position groups.

Lastly, you dip into the transfer portal to address depth issues, but it’ll cost in NIL $$$.

The State of The U series has dissected our position groups and identified that we are still lacking elite players to compete for Nat’l Champ. but that overall talent and depth has improved.

We’ll find out in 2024. Go Canes!
