WHAT’S UP TODAY

First up this morning in your Miami Hurricanes news?

CaneSport kicked off its annual Miami Hurricanes State of The U series yesterday with Gary Ferman’s big picture column. Today it’s on to breaking down the recruiting classes that make up the backbone of the team’s roster. After all, whenever you evaluate the state of a program, the first thing you look at is the personnel you bring in and how they are developed. In this particular case, the Miami roster Mario Cristobal inherited was formed starting with the Class of 2019. That was Manny Diaz’s first year taking over the program.

CaneSport also is breaking down the top 30 Miami players on the roster, and today we’re at No. 21, RB Mark Fletcher.

And in recruiting we catch up with Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland four-star defensive lineman LJ McCray. He is down to five programs, and the Miami Hurricanes are among his final group. Plus Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington four-star 2025 defensive back Antonio “TJ” Branch is quickly emerging as one of the top South Florida talents in his class, and the Hurricanes are taking notice. He shares his thoughts.

In baseball we have an update with Yoyo Morales, who shared his take after being selected No. 40 overall in the Major League Baseball Draft. And we also had your news on four more Hurricanes getting selected yesterday in addition to Morales and Andrew Walters on Day 1.

And, as always, stay tuned today for any news that may come up.

MESSAGE BOARD POST OF THE DAY

State of The U … Posted by Dalew2009

Great writeup Gary. There was a comment in there that caught my attention, which was that in 2024 Miami expects to compete to make the 12 team playoff and 2025 be ready to win it all.

I’m concerned about that expectation honestly. If everything happens that needs to happen for Miami to have a successful 2023, 2024 could be a step backwards. Think about it.

if Miami wins 9-10 games this year, Miami will lose a ton of talent to the draft and graduation. TVD, LT, Matt Lee, Zion Nelson, Javion Cohen, Jalen Rivers, Kam Kinchens, James Williams, Ahkeem Mesidore, Francisco Mauigo are likely all headed to the draft. That’s not even counting graduates like Devontae Brown, Tecoury Couch, Henry Parish, all the DT we brought in for one year, etc.

we could lose 80% of our OL, our starting QB, our entire secondary, MLB, our entire DL assuming Harvey starts and not Kelly.

Miami will play Florida, Florida State, ND, Clemson in 2024, in what will be another difficult schedule. I really think we could see a jump to 9-10 this year and a step back to 7-8 in 2024, with 2025 being the year that it all comes together and the team wins consistently under Mario going forward.

MIAMI HURRICANES QUOTE OF THE DAY

“They tell me that I fit the culture that they’re trying to build down there and that I could be a big piece to help turn that program around.”
