WHAT’S UP TODAY

First up this morning in your Miami Hurricanes news?

Well, stay tuned for updates with Mario Cristobal, Josh Gattis and Kevin Steele looking ahead to the huge Texas A&M game.

And, of course the big news from over the weekend was the the game against Southern Miss, and we had you fully covered. There were columns from Gary Ferman and Jim Martz, our game story/analysis and Grading the Canes from Matt Shodell, a video and photo gallery, player/coach Mario Cristobal feedback afterward, sights and sounds of the game, a postgame show with Dave Lamont, five takeaways from Izubee Charles, a Sunday Pro Football Focus analysis with grades of the team as well as a CaneSport mailbag with Gary Ferman answering postgame questions from fans.

Plus this morning we have a few more updates.

Mario Cristobal is talking early today, so be sure to check his take on the game upon further review … and his look ahead to Texas A&M.

Plus we reached out to top targets on Miami’s recruiting radar to get their picks on who wins the Miami-Texas A&M game. Some of what they say may surprise you. We got hold of more than 35 top prospects who weighed in, so make sure you read that item.

We also talked with a key DB target, Edwin Joseph out of Chaminade-Madonna. He visited Miami Friday and was tempted to commit, and weighs in on that … and his big prediction for the game at Texas A&M. So don’t miss that.

And we have an update with Miami commitment Connor Lew, who came to town for a visit this weekend and was in the recruiting section for the game.

We also had pregame coverage on Friday afternoon/Saturday morning that included your game notes, 5 keys to the game and updates with Andy Borregales and Akheem Mesidor. There also was a Friday afternoon recruiting update with 4-star 2024 QB Michael Van Buren, who is emerging on the radar, as well as a Saturday morning Live From The Crib feature breaking down the talent at the Miami Central vs. Booker T. game.

And, as always, stay tuned today for any news that may come up.

MESSAGE BOARD POST OF THE DAY

Post-Game Opinion On The Southern Miss Game (Long-ish) … Posted by advarkas

(1) Team was obviously flat, soft, and cucky First Half. That was a real issue. We paid a lot of money to a lot of supposed great coaches to have this team ready, motiviated, and firing from the get-go irrespective of the competition. That didn’t happen. We saw a lot of going-through-the-motions, players disinterested, lack of a sense of urgency, and all of the flat, soft, cuckness we’ve seen define this Program for years now. This Progarm with a QB like TVD and with this coaching staff should never be in a 10-7 dogfight at home to a beat down program like Southern Miss.

That said………….

(2) Second Half was clearly a different game. I didn’t see a lot of schematic changes on Offense – just a go-get-em’ higher focus which should have been there from the opening kickoff. Execution in the run game was solid, and there was definitely a sense of urgency. On Defense, I don’t care about deficiencies at the LB position, or secondary players who can be exploited against 4-5 WR sets. Be agressive on Defense, get TFLs, get sacks, and get turnvoers. And you know what…??? When we are agressive, we get TFLs, we get sacks, and we get turnovers – even when we get burned, or give up big plays, or give up some scores. Miami football was built on being aggressive and attacking.

(3) I LOVE this thunder-lighting combination of Thaddius Young and Henry Parrish. Henry is a third-year sophmore, and Young is a second-year sophmore. We all want Chaney and Citizen to recover, and many see those two RBs as the future. I think that we have some real good legs here with Young and Parrish as a thunder-lighting combination, and I LOVED those early 2nd Half series where they got going with attitude. Rooster dances a bit too much for me right now, but he obviously add an explosive dimension to this Offense.

(4) TVD – he struggled. He’s allowed to struggle in a game. I thought that the early passing route concepts which required 5-7 step drops were a recipe for disaster- the OL couldn’t block well and TVD was indecisive and was far too late with throws. Gattis tightened up the passing game with more slants and 3-step routes, and there was a better flow for the 2nd Half.

(5) Tyrique Stephenson – wow I thought he stood out on both Special Teams and Defense. The 4th-year Junior man is clearly THE guy in the secondary.

(6) I thought the OL, for the most part, was VERY POOR. Just a real problem getting push up front, and Gattis had to rely on some misdirection and guards pulling to the strong side to create running lanes. The RPO game does not help the run game, because even though TVD is a VERY good athlete with mobility, he is not a running QB, and the threat of him running in the RPO game is mostly fake news.

(7) PERSPECTIVE. Two Games – we have outscored Bethune and Southern Miss 100-20, going 16 of 24 (67% Conversion) on 3rd Down. We have forced SIX Turnovers, and committed 2 Turnovers, for a +4 Differential. I see SEVERAL weaknesses that will need improvement, but I see a LOT of positive and encouraging individual play. This is a team this year capable of finishing 9-3 with a good bowl win to finish 10-3, and around #12-#18 (which is what I predicted about a month ago). A&M and Clemson will be favored over us, and FSU, VT, UNC, and Pitt are 50-50 games. I think we have a good chance of going 4-2; maybe we catch lightning and go 5-1; likely 3-3 on these 6 games.

MIAMI HURRICANES QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for [Coach Fisher]. They are a very talented football team. Most importantly, we need to go back and asses our film. Where are our holes? Where could we have been better today? Where can we firm up the things that we can be better at so we can operate at a high level in a very hostile environment, as we know, against a really talented football team. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Fisher and his team.”
