In his own words: Mark Fletcher explains his decision to stay home
It has been a long journey for the University of Miami commit, four-star RB Mark Fletcher, but after putting pen to paper and signing for Mario Cristobal and the Canes, he can put this chapter in his story to rest.
“Man this is a blessing, a lot of kids wish they could be here,” Fletcher told CaneSport. “I just feel relieved, and that’s a big thing. It’s been a long process, and I’m just happy it’s over. I’m happy I can just have one focus, and we’re on to that next level.”
A former Ohio State commit, Fletcher de-committed from the Buckeyes in November and was deciding between two programs down the stretch: Miami and Florida. In the end, the Hurricanes prevailed as Fletcher chose to stay home and play for the team he grew up loving and rooting for.
“Everyone has said why Miami, why not Miami,” he explained.”They’ve always been there for me, ever since I was in eighth grade. With a new staff, they’ve been preaching to me how much they want to put Miami back on top. They believe I could do that, and they believe other recruits could do that, so it’s a great opportunity for me and them.”
What stood out about Cristobal to Fletcher was his win-at-all-cost mentality and his leadership.
“He’s a leader, and he hates losing,” Fletcher said. “Why wouldn’t you want him as your head coach? He wants to win, and he’s going to win. He’s got some dogs coming for him too.”
Fletcher is Miami’s second commitment at running back, joining fellow four-star Chris Johnson. The two will hope that complementary power and speed complement one another at the next level.

“A lot of those guys on defense but I have to say that fast boy Chris Johnson,” Fletcher said. “I can’t wait to play with him. He’s a great back, and I just can’t wait to light it up with him. Thunder and lightning, we are coming soon.”
The 6-foot-1, 225-pounder won’t enroll in Miami until the summer, but he is counting down the days until he can officially represent ‘The U’ in orange and green.
“It’s a blessing, and I can’t wait to do it,” he added. “Can’t wait to keep growing my name and put on for the city. Go Canes!”
Fletcher’s On3 scouting summary reads “Big back who projects as a between-the-tackles power runner at the college level. Has a taller build and should top out north of 230 pounds after spending time in a college strength program. Plays for one of the top talent-producing programs in the state of Florida. Shows good feet with the ability to make defenders miss with lateral agility. Has some natural power and contact balance. Squares his shoulders and has the leg drive to run through arm tackles. Catches the ball well out of the backfield. Should be dangerous on the goal line. Will need to continue improving his top-end speed in order to rip off long runs once in the open field. Solid production, but lacks the high-end production.”
