Following his official visit to Florida State, Miami commit Rueben Bain made the decision that he wanted to stay home and commit to the University of Miami.

“It was something I was thinking of after the trip,” Bain told CaneSport. “Me and my family sat down and talked about it, and we just made it official the next day, coming back from the trip. We just talked about the relationships with the coaches. What program can I fit it into? How can they move me to be a better player? And they (Miami) checked all the boxes.”

One of the first calls he made following that decision was to Miami head coach Mario Cristobal, who was with defensive line coach Rod Wright, and his reaction was priceless.

“He was on a private jet with coach Wright, and he turned bright red, and he kind of threw his phone across the plane,” Bain said. “It was an amazing feeling seeing him get so excited and so hyped. I really knew I was wanted there.”

Ultimately, after the long recruiting battle, Miami’s persistence with Bain paid off.

“I feel great; I feel like I have a huge weight off my chest,” Bain said. “Something I’m looking forward to for years to come. Just willing to change the program around and bring a natty back to Miami.”

Early this year, Bain matched up against his future Miami teammate, five-star OL Francis Mauigoa, when the Rockets downed his IMG Ascenders squad 20-14. When asked, Bain said Mauigoa is who he is most excited to play with and practice against once he gets to Coral Gables.

“I’m excited to play with and practice against Francis,” Bain said. “I feel like we’re going to get some real iron on iron. That’s what Coach Cristobal preaches to me every day; he’s always saying iron sharpens iron, and that’s what’s really going to make your team better. Going against him in practice every day, I feel like that’s going to bring the best out of both of us.”

With Bain’s addition to Miami’s 2023 class, the Hurricanes have moved to the No. 7 spot nationally according to the On3 Football Industry Comparison. Like himself, Bain wants to add some more South Florida talent to the group to round out Cristobal’s inaugural class.

“Damari Brown and Andy Jean,” Bain said. “Some of the local guys. I feel like if you get the right local guys, it’s better than getting somebody from out of town.”
