Javion Cohen, former Alabama OL starter, commits in huge portal addition for Miami Hurricanes
Miami makes move with DL transfer Thomas Gore off visit: “I felt like part of the family while I was down there” … As recruiting builds toward early signing day, Miami Hurricanes closing on an epic finish … Oregon WR transfer Dont’e Thornton has “great visit” to Miami, updates announcement timeline: “They told me I have a great opportunity” … Inside look: Mark Fletcher trending toward Miami, visit weekend for top recruits “was great”
The Miami Hurricanes struggled tremendously on offense last season, in part due to inconsistent play up front. Well, today the O line got a huge injection of talent. Javion Cohen, who started 25 of the last 27 games at left guard for Alabama, will be playing for the Miami Hurricanes next season.
Cohen committed following a weekend official visit to Miami.
Cohen, who entered the portal the day it opened, made 11 starts this year for a unit that allowed only 12 sacks in the regular season. He had 14 starts in 2021 and was on the SEC All-Freshman team in 2020.
Cohen has two years of eligibility remaining. He had an 80.5 pass-blocking grade and 68.9 run-blocking grade this year per Pro Football Focus.
With Cohen on board it will be interesting to see if Miami pursues other portal pieces. The team has back linemen with starting experience in OT Zion Nelson (missed almost all of last season injured), OG Jalen Rivers, OG Anez Cooper and C Jakai Clark. Matthew McCoy, who was banged up last year, is also someone Miami coaches are very high on.
There’s also a tremendous amount of OL talent committed to UM with Tommy Kinsler, Francis Mauigoa, Samson Okunlola, Frankie Tinilau and Antonio Tripp.

Could this now be a much improved unit with Cohen and considering the huge recruiting haul that’s coming on board? You have to think so.
CaneSport’s take
Wow, this is an absolutely huge pickup and was probably the No. 1 guy that Miami could have chosen out of the over 1,000 guys in the portal. An Alabama starter who has that work ethic and knows what it takes to win isn’t just valuable on the field, but also off it in making sure others on this UM team are held the highest standard as Mario Cristobal seeks to rebuild this roster in the vision he wants.
