The inside story on Kaleb Spencer's Friday night commitment flip from Oklahoma to Miami
When Kaleb Spencer, a three-star hybrid linebacker from Colonial Heights (VA) Life Christian Academy, visited Miami for the North Carolina game, he violated a thus far loosely-enforced rule set by Oklahoma that commits may not visit other schools. Since that day, his relationship with the Sooners, to whom he committed in May, has been a bit on ice.
Sources told CaneSport last week that Oklahoma had already begun exploring replacements for Spencer.
At the same time, Spencer intensified things with Miami and planned to decommit from Oklahoma to The U on Monday. But Friday Oklahoma got wind of his plans and that quickly led to an early divorce.
So Friday night, through On 3’s Hayes Fawcett, Spencer announced that he no longer was a Oklahoma commit and was flipping to Miami.
“First off it’s Miami,” Spencer told Fawcett. “I have always loved their program from the greats that came from the U at my position. (Miami DB Coach) Jahmile) Addae really put the foot on the gas in recruiting me. I loved everything he was offering me and it’s on the east coast. It felt like it was a better opportunity for me and my family.

“It’s all love and genuine, and we are all ready to work.. think me and coach Addae have the best relationship right now.”
Miami is searching hard for linebackers in the 2023 class. Spencer ranks as the No. 729 player in the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that accounts all four major recruiting services. He is the No. 70 linebacker and the No. 18 player in the state of Virginia.
But Miami clearly thinks he is better than that. Spencer was offered by Miami in September after his team played against Stranahan in week one in August. Spencer was impressive in that game and Miami noticed his performance on tape while watching Hykeem Williams. Addae had a relationship with Spencer’s coach and Miami entered the raced for his services.
Spencer joins Raul Aguirre, Bobby Washington and Malik Bryant as committed linebackers in the 2023 class.
