Deerfield Beach (Fla.) four-star 2024 EDGE Elias Rudolph didn’t pick Miami first, but he still ended up in Coral Gables.

Rudolph, the No. 303 national recruit and No. 25 EDGE in the 2024 cycle, completed his flip to the Hurricanes following a decommitment from Michigan, where he initially committed to July 3, and announcing his intent to play for Miami next season. Miami, Michigan and Pitt were in a recruiting battle to land the 6-foot-3, 200-pound prospect earlier this season before he committed to the Wolverines, and the Hurricanes didn’t pull back their recruiting effort despite his initial decision.

Rudolph attended Miami’s end-of-summer recruiting barbecue July 29 where the Hurricanes made incremental progress with the four-star, but contact never slowed between the two sides, and the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine listed Miami as a favorite to flip Rudolph early during the Aug. 12 afternoon. Miami was given a 52.1 chance to flip Rudolph from the Wolverines after previously having less than a 5% chance.

Miami offered Rudolph in April, much later than the majority of other Hurricane targets in the 2024 class, but aggressively pushed immediately after establishing contact. He traveled to Coral Gables for his official visit June 16, his final visit before his announcement, and canceled his official visit to Ohio State set for the following week.

He still ultimately committed to the Wolverines during the first week of July, but buzz picked up in late July and early August the Hurricanes were moving in a positive direction with Rudolph before he announced his decision to decommit from Michigan and instead flip to Miami.

His commitment gives the Hurricanes — whose 2024 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 19 — their 20th pledge of the cycle, second EDGE and eighth four-star commit. Miami intends to use him in the JACK position as a hybrid linebacker and stand-up edge rusher.

Miami co-defensive line coach Jason Taylor served as his primary recruiter.

CaneSport’s Take

Talent and ability aside, flipping Rudolph from Michigan feels like a significant recruiting win for the Hurricanes who lost out on prospects like Five-Star Plus+ receiver Jeremiah Smith and four-star quarterback Air Noland to Ohio State, three-star receiver Jacory Barney to Nebraska and other top targets to Big Ten schools.

The Canes can pat themselves on the back for stealing Rudolph from a Michigan team that has recruited exceptionally well in this class and landing a hotly-pursued prospect.
