Six-run seventh inning propels Miami to 14-7 win against FIU

MIAMI — The University of Miami took care of business.
In a backyard battle against crosstown foe FIU, the Hurricanes put up a crooked number in the seventh to beat the Panthers, 14-7, at FIU Baseball Stadium Tuesday evening.
The Hurricanes (14-10) scored six runs on three hits, as Miami sent 12 batters to the plate in the pivotal seventh inning.
Catcher Carlos Perez worked a bases-loaded walk to put the Hurricanes ahead 8-7, before center fielder Jacoby Long padded the lead with a two-run double down the left field line.
As they had done all night, the Hurricanes put pressure on the Panthers (13-12).
Urso followed with a safety squeeze to push the advantage to four.
With runners on the corners, Urso ran into the middle of first and second to force a rundown. While Urso caught the attention of FIU’s defense, Long scampered 90 feet to steal home.

Following the six-run frame, relievers Chris Scinta (1-0), Brian Walters and Myles Caba teamed up to retire eight of the final 10 batters to secure the Hurricanes’ 12th straight victory over FIU.
In the win, Miami finished with a season-high three stolen bases, including two of home by Urso and Long.
Up next, the Hurricanes welcome No. 3 Clemson to Mark Light Field. The three-game set begins at 7 p.m. Thursday.
