Mario Cristobal shares thoughts as Miami Hurricanes hold partial scrimmage on Saturday ... "Defense had a better day than the offense"

The Miami Hurricanes held a closed scrimmage today with a very limited amount of tackling to the ground and then thudding. It was the team’s first true scrimmage work of the spring, and afterward coach Mario Cristobal summed up that “The offense is doing a really good job running the ball, throwing the ball (was) a little bit inconsistent today. I give credit to the defense. The way they affected the pocket and affected the passer were really effective. Coverage was really on point. They were really snug, just locked up and very competitive. Every ball seemed to be contested at some point in time. A little bit of success in the red zone but overall the defense had a better day than the offense did.”
Cristobal doesn’t want much information divulged from the closed practices/scrimmage periods, so fans are going to have to wait to find out depth charts, injury news and other details.
What Cristobal did say today?
He says the defensive installs under new coordinator Corey Hetherman are “on schedule.”
“He’s a super intense guy, extremely smart,” Cristobal said. “High football IQ, really, really intense. If you’re not about learning, intensity and just bringing it on a daily basis it’s not going to be for you. It’s like (offensive coordinator) Shannon Dawson – they’re both elite professionals. Coach Hetherman has brought in his demeanor of being a tough, physical defense that communicates really, really well. Lines up and makes no excuses. Technique and fundamentals are at the forefront. There has been a lot of progress, you saw that today. If you talk to them – we still need a lot more work, a lot more improvement. But you heard the guys coming off he field, there’s legitimate excitement because it’s really starting to look different.”

The Canes will wrap up spring drills next week, with the Spring Game to be held April 12 at Cobb Stadium beginning at 4 p.m.
That will be the best chance for fans and media to be able to publicly report on depth chart, missing personnel, etc. So stay tuned for that.
