Keelan Marion

The Miami Hurricanes needed second portal wide receiver help. And now they’ve got it. BYU’s Keelan Marion has chosen UM over Texas.

Marion is a great fit for Miami not just as a playmaking receiver who could play slot or outside, but also as a return man. The 6-0, 195-pounder was a second-team All-Big 12 pick as a kick returner after taking back 18 kicks for 472 yards and two TDs last season (26.2 KOR avg. led Big 12). Oh, and he also has five career rushing scores.

He makes a lot of sense at Miami, where there is a need for a top returner and also little returning WR experience aside from first portal window transfer addition CJ Daniels out of LSU. Marion is a versatile weapon who worked in the slot for 144 reps last season and was out wide for 311. The Hurricanes will be able to move him around and work guys like Daniels, JoJo Trader, Malachi Toney and others in depending where Marion lines up.

We could see a starting lineup of Marion, Daniels and Trader.

As for Marion’s background?

In 2021 at UConn he started every game as a redshirt freshman and led the team with 474 yards on 28 receptions with five TDs. The following year he played in just four games due to injury, with four receptions, then transferred to BYU, and in 2023 and had 20 catches for 216 yards but no TDs. This past season he caught 24 passes for 346 yards and a score, adding 21 carries for 96 yards and two TDs.

If you want some perspective on Marion as a person/player, his former high school coach at Loganville (Ga.) Grayson High School, Christian Hunnicutt, provides it. Hunnicutt says he anticipates bigtime production for Marion at Miami.

“Great kid,” Hunnicutt says. “Unbelievable receiver. He’s an excellent, outstanding practice player, too, a true student of the game, wants to learn, always asking questions. He takes pride in finishing routes, finishing blocks. … He’s a mild-mannered kid, not his own hype machine. He does let his work do his talking for him. He’s a day-in, day-out worker.”

Per Pro Football Focus he played 457 reps last season and graded out at 67.5 percent. In 2023 he had a 57.4 grade in 358 reps, and at UConn in 2021 he had a 59.5 grade in 608 reps before playing just 94 reps due to injury in 2022.

Now it’s on to the next home for the elusive speedster.
