"Not Dead Yet”: Miami Hurricanes Baseball Surges Back into NCAA Tournament Picture

There’s a famous scene in Monty Pyton and the Holy Grail where, in the midst of the plague, a cart is shuffled around town collecting all the dead bodies. One particular family, apparently sick of an annoying grandfather, loads him onto the cart.

“I’m not dead!” the grandfather exclaims, to no avail.

And perhaps that’s the best way to describe this year’s Miami Hurricanes baseball team. Left for dead by even their ardent supporters early in the season after a 16-16 start that included a woeful 3-8 ACC record … on the heels of the team’s first losing season since 1957 … many were piling the UM baseball bones onto the cart.

Not so fast.

Since then Miami’s pulled together after swapping in two freshmen weekend starting pitchers – AJ Ciscar (4-1, 3.42 ERA) and Tate DeRias (2-0, 2.60 ERA), who joined Friday night starter Griffin Hugus (5-4, 3.68 ERA). Miami also figured out the closer situation (Brian Walters went from starter to the role and has seven saves).

The hitting’s also done its part, led by a red-hot Daniel Cuvet (.341, team high 12 home runs and 64 RBI), Jake Ogden (team high .344 batting average and 45 runs, 5 HRs) and Max Galvin (.293, 4 HR).

What it’s all meant?

Since that poor start that had CaneSport message board posters calling for J.D. Arteaga to be fired, the team’s gone 13-2 (11-1 ACC). For reference, the nation’s top-ranked team by D1Baseball, Texas, is 11-4 in its last 15 games.

Once left for dead, Miami is not yet in the top 25 but is solidly in the D1Baseball regional field (projected May 6). The Canes are one of nine ACC teams included and are a 2 seed in the Baton Rouge regional with No. 1 LSU (projected No. 4 national seed), No. 3 SE Louisiana and No. 4 Central Connecticut. Miami hasn’t won a road regional since 2006 … or a regional at all since 2016 … but this is a team that’s really hitting its stride.

The Canes now have seven regular season games remaining – tonight against FIU, a series at Virginia and a final home series vs. Notre Dame.

Then it’s on to the ACC Tournament. And, it appears, the postseason, with the team expected to make its 47th NCAA Tournament appearance. Will a 26th College World Series appearance result?

Let’s not put the cart before the horse.
