Portal Alert: Miami Hurricanes land versatile Washington DB transfer Mishael Powell, helping shore up team's secondary issues
The Miami Hurricanes lost star safeties Kam Kinchens and James Williams to the NFL and also need help at cornerback with starters Te’Cory Couch and Jaden Davis out of eligibility.
Now a fix who has versatility to play any of those spots has chosen Miami via the transfer portal.
Highly touted Washington DB Mishael Powell, a former walkon who became a standout starter for the team that lost in the national title game, has chosen his future home.
Yes, he’ll be roaming the secondary for Miami in 2024. Florida was another big player who chased Powell after he entered the portal.
Powell is a versatile addition for the Canes – he started every game this past season and has experience playing cornerback, nickel and safety.
Last year he ended with 38 tackles, 2.5 for losses, and three interceptions – one of those was an 89-yard return for a TD with 8:11 remaining and the Huskies trailing by one point to Arizona State (see that clip below). Washington won that game, 15-7. He added nine pass breakups.
In 2022 he started nine games and had 29 tackles, 1.5 for losses, and off the bench in 2021 he had 11 tackles and three pass breakups.

At 6-1 and 210 pounds, perhaps Powell is most likely to fit in at safety for Miami, but he also could work at cornerback or even STAR depending on what Lance Guidry decides to do with his skillset.
As for his Pro Football Focus grades?
In 876 reps this past season he had a 69.0 overall grade and 73.9 cover grade with opponents completing 49 of 66 passes when targeting him for 432 yards. He also was noted with 14 missed tackles (he had a low 39.6 tackle grade). in 2022 he graded out at 61.4 percent with a 62.6 cover grade (52.1 tackle grade with 10 missed tackles). That year he was targeted 42 times and opponents completed 35 of those for 331 yards.
Powell has one year of eligibility remaining. He began his college career in the Class of 2019 with no stars and as a walkon, so he’s certainly come a long way.
And now he’s going a long way, with the Seattle, Wash. native leaving one side of the country and going to the other at Miami.
