Christopher Johnson announces pledge to Miami Hurricanes in much-needed RB addition to class

The University of Miami has landed a speedy playmaking running back in this year’s class. Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) Dillard High School RB Christopher Johnson, Jr., who won state titles in the 100 and 200, has announced his commitment to Miami coming off a weekend official visit to UM.
It was the culmination of a long recruiting process – he first landed a Miami offer May 18, his 28th offer.
He chose Miami over Ole Miss in the end, but Clemson had also pushed late in the game.
A big factor for Johnson wasn’t just staying home, or playing with former teammate/good friend Nyjalik Kelly.
It was his Cane recruitment by RB coach Kevin Smith. It was Smith that gave Johnson the UM offer and built a strong bond with him.

“We keep it real,” Johnson said. “He said he’d love to have me at Miami, that I can do big things there. … He’s a good coach, I can learn from him.”
A former Rutgers commitment, most of Johnson’s family is Cane fans, which certainly didn’t hurt … although his father is a Florida State fan. There’s also this tie: Johnson’s cousin is former Cane WR Mike Harley.
And there’s this, simply put:
“It’s my hometown,” Johnson said.
Yes, he will now be putting on in front of friends and family staying close to home.
CaneSport’s take
This is a big get for Miami, and Johnson really blew up this spring with some major offers coming his way including the Canes. He’s a smaller, shifty back with gamebreaking speed, and Josh Gattis will no doubt find ways to get the ball in his hands as a receiving back as well. Does this mean UM will give up the chase for Mark Fletcher from Florida? We don’t think so since they are different type backs. But now having one really solid back in the class is a great addition.
