Last week, Miami defensive line coach Jason Taylor made his way up to Orlando to check in on 2026 defensive lineman DeAnthony Lafayette. After watching the fast-rising prospect in action, Taylor quickly offered Lafayette, whose recruitment has begun to pick up this spring.

“I was honestly surprised by it but very excited to see Miami be the first in-state Power Four school to offer me,” Lafayette told CaneSport. “For an NFL Hall of Famer to see me perform and be impressed by my talents enough to offer me means a lot. That lets me know the work I’m doing is paying off.”

With an offer on the table, Lafayette and the Hurricanes are working on setting up an official visit, with a date already in mind.

“I’ve been to Miami a few times for unofficial visits, but since they offered me, they’ve sent me a few dates for official visits now,” Lafayette said. “I’ll probably be taking one that first weekend, from May 30 to June 1.”

When the 6-foot-1, 230-pounder makes his way to Coral Gables, Lafayette has a few things in mind that he wants to see and learn from the program.

“I want to know the staff and how they treat each other,” Lafayette said. “I want to see if they’re a very connected staff. I also want to see if there is a real brotherhood over there.”

Along with Miami, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, Boston College, and LSU are schools that have recently offered Lafayette. At the moment, he currently has official visits set with the Eagles (June 6–8), the Tigers (June 13–15), and the Sooners (June 20–22).

“I want to find a school that will take my talents and maximize them,” Lafayette said when asked what he’ll be looking for most in a program.

His overall thoughts on Miami?

“That’s a big school for me,” Lafayette said. “The year they had last season with Cam Ward was great. They’re building something, which you can tell.”

This past fall, Lafayette racked up 73 tackles, 17.5 sacks, and 18 tackles for loss. He is not yet ranked by the On3 Industry Ranking.

“I’m a very dynamic pass rusher,” Lafayette said. “I have a deep bag. I can use power, but I also have speed. The strong point of my game is definitely my speed rush.”

CaneSport’s take
Lafayette is becoming a name to know in the 2026 cycle. He may be a late bloomer, but that hasn’t stopped Miami from showing strong interest in the currently unranked prospect.
