This past weekend during the Battle Miami 7v7 tournament, Davie (Fla.) McArthur safety Jaylyn Jones was arguably the top defensive back at the event. After helping lift his Defcon squad to a championship, the 2027 prospect was named the No. 3 performer by On3’s national scout Cody Bellaire.

“Jones was constantly breaking on underneath throws and making plays at the catch point,” Bellaire wrote. “You could sense opponents’ frustrations building when going up against him because they simply could not find separation. His foot speed and instincts when it comes to coverage allowed him to remain in phase all afternoon for Defcon United.”

Following the two-day event, Jones has put the nation on notice, but one program that has been high on the rising South Florida star for some time now has been the Miami Hurricanes. Since receiving an offer from the Canes six months ago, Jones’ interest in the program has only risen.

“My relationship with the Canes is really good,” Jones told CaneSport. “I like that they offered me early, and I’m from here. That’s big that my hometown college had offered me as a freshman. I would love to be a Cane.”

The 6-foot, 180-pound safety says he feels a sense of comfort at Miami and around the Hurricanes staff due to his relationship with UM’s Frank Tucker, who is the program’s recruiting relations coordinator.

“I feel like I would be more comfortable,” Jones said. “And that makes me trust Miami some more with Frank being involved with it.”

Jones also had high praise for Miami head coach Mario Cristobal, who led the Canes to their first 10-win season since 2017 this past fall.

“I feel like he is building a great program,” Jones said. “I feel like they can eventually make it to a national championship and win.

With over a dozen offers, Jones is excited to see what the future holds with not only Miami but also several other top programs across the country.

“My recruitment has been going well, and I’ve been getting a lot of interest from Auburn, Georgia, and Miami lately,” Jones said. “In my recruitment, I’ll be looking at how the coaching is there and the relationship I have with the coaches and team.”

CaneSport’s take

Jones says seeing the Hurricanes not hesitate to offer him early in his recruiting process piqued his interest in Miami. In some cases, the Canes have slow-played things with local prospects, but they are wasting no time with Jones, which may be beneficial for the program down the road.
