With Josh Gattis gone, Miami will have its 5th new offensive coordinator in the last 6 years
Offensive coordinator Josh Gattis bore plenty of ire from Miami fans after the team’s 5-7 2022 season. And now Gattis is gone, with a coordinator search ongoing. Mario Cristobal announced Friday morning that he would be replacing Gattis.
CaneSport has confirmed that Gattis will also not remain as wide receiver coach.
A search is well underway for both positions.
Gattis bore plenty of ire from Miami Hurricanes fans after the team’s disappointing 5-7 2022 season. The offense he ran struggled after Rhett Lashlee got the attack back on track the prior two years.
This was a Miami team that scored 10 or fewer points in three of its losses (Texas A&M, FSU and Clemson) and only got into double digits at Virginia because the game went to four overtime periods.
On the season Gattis’ Miami offense averaged 23.6 points and 367.1 yards, down from Lashlee’s attack the prior season that averaged 34.1 points and 448.8 yards.
With that said, there also were numerous injuries that certainly set back Miami.
Let’s review those for a moment: QB Tyler Van Dyke missed three games and only lasted the first series in two others. Starting RB Henry Parrish missed two games and fellow RB Don Chaney missed all but one Miami game while a preseason injury cost TreVonte’ Citizen the season.
Top WR Xavier Restrepo missed five games. TE Elijah Arroyo, expected to be a major contributor, suffered a season-ending injury in the fourth game. On the OL Zion Nelson was hurt all year, Jalen Rivers missed the final three games and C Jakai Clark missed two games injured.

The team also didn’t run the same up-tempo style under Gattis, which meant the offense had less plays per game (went from 73.3 plays per game to 68.9 even with Gattis’ grind-it-out style).
You could say it all went wrong for Gattis at Miami with his style of offense, which really wanted what he ran at Michigan – a power run game with spread elements and heavy use of the tight ends. Once the O line wasn’t performing well that basically was a death knoll for that type of attack. And of course the injury to Van Dyke – with backups Jake Garcia and Jacurri Brown struggling in their opportunities – literally added insult to injury.
So now it’s on to the next at offensive coordinator for Miami.
The team is hoping to find someone that not only can get the offense going but also will have some longevity.
Whomever is hired will be the fifth coordinator running the Miami offense in the last six years.
Prior to that it was Thomas Brown’s turn to be listed as coordinator with Mark Richt actually calling plays.
In 2019 it was Dan Enos with a not-real-good one-year stint.
He was replaced by Lashlee, who left to take over as SMU’s head coach after two years at Miami.
And now Gattis is being replaced.
