BREAKING: 2023 three-star WR Jaelen Smith has signed with Michigan State
2023 Houston (TX) Klein Cain three-star WR Jaelen Smith has signed with Michigan State. Smith, standing at 6-foot-2, 190-pounds, originally committed to the Spartans on December 20, 2022. Smith held additional offers from Minnesota, Memphis, Vanderbilt, Army, and more. The 2023 On3 Consensus three-star is ranked No. 646 nationally, the No. 94 wide receiver, and the No. 110 player in the state of Texas.
On3 rates Smith a three-star prospect (87.00), the No. 146 wide receiver, and the No. 139 player in the state of Texas. Smith does not have a nationally ranking, according to On3.
“The reputation that they have there stood out.” Smith told SpartanMag.com. “Coach (Courtney Hawkins) is a good receivers coach. All the coaches have NFL experience. I want to go to the NFL, so going to a coaching staff with that experience is big.”
Following his visit to East Lansing in December, Smith raved about the Spartans’ coaching staff and their relationship.
“I have a good relationship with Coach Hawk (Courtney Hawkins), Coach (Rodney) Freeman,” Smith told SpartanMag.com. “I developed a good relationship with Coach (Mel Tucker) while I was there. I have a good relationship. I talk to them at least once a week at the minimum.”

During that visit, Smith also sat down with Mel Tucker and discussed the program’s goals and how he fits into the staff’s plans moving forward.
“He was telling me the same thing,” Smith said. “How well I would fit, how good the program is, the plan, all of that. I like Coach Tucker. He has had success there. I can tell he is on a mission. He has a plan for the program as a whole.”
