East Lansing, Mich. – On the same day that Michigan State lost defensive linemen Jalen Hunt and Dashaun Mallory to the NCAA transfer portal, the Spartans also saw true freshman defensive end Chase Carter enter the portal. The top-ranked prospect in Minnesota and No. 29 overall d-line prospect by On3 in the Class of 2022, Carter saw action in only one game during his freshman season.

Carter, a January enrollee, signed with the Spartans over offers from Iowa and Iowa State. He visited all three schools during the recruiting process.

Carter was a two-sport standout in high school, playing both basketball and football.

Carter becomes the fourth defensive linemen in the Spartan program to enter the portal in the past week, joining Mallory, Hunt and Michael Fletcher.

With the Spartans having severe depth problems at defensive end, Carter made the travel roster for Michigan State’s final game of the season, at Penn State.

Michigan State has made defensive line recruiting a priority in its 2023 recruiting class. The Spartans currently have commitments from several defensive ends ranked in the Top 250 by On3.

Bai Jobe is the highest ranked of that group as the No. 75 overall prospect, No. 11 edge rusher and No. 1 prospect in the state of Oklahoma during this recruiting cycle.

Iowa native Andrew DePaepe will sign with Michigan State as the No. 111 overall prospect, No. 18 edge rusher and No. 2 player in Iowa, per On3.

Detroit Cass Tech’s Jalen Thompson is also part of Michigan State’s 2023 recruiting class. At 6-foot-3, 240 pounds, Thompson is classified as a d-line recruit by On3. He is ranked No. 3 in Michigan and No. 229 overall in this class.

Penn State transfer Ken Talley is another young lineman that Carter would have had to compete with for playing time had Carter opted to stay at Michigan State rather than jump to the portal. Talley, a 6-foot-2, 243-pound freshman, transferred to Michigan State without playing a single down for Penn State. As a high school senior in Philadelphia, Talley was ranked the No. 33 edge rusher and No. 11 prospect in Pennsylvania.
