East Lansing, Mich. – Former Michigan State wide receiver Tyrell Henry committed to Wisconsin this afternoon after entering the NCAA transfer portal on December 4th. He garnered offers from Boston College, Indiana, Marshall, Miami (OH.), Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Western Kentucky and Wisconsin in his 11 day stay in the portal.

Henry, a class of 2022 recruit from Roseville (Mich.) High School, will begin his career at Wisconsin going into his junior season after playing his first two at Michigan State. Henry will be reunited with his former high school teammate, Amare Snowden, who was a four-star defensive back in 2023. Snowden was committed to Cincinnati, but ultimately followed coach Luke Fickell to Wisconsin.

Henry was the primary kick and punt returner this past season for the Spartans while also being in the rotation at receiver. This past season, Henry ranked fourth on the team in catches with 24. Three other key pass catchers, Jaron Glover, Christian Fitzpatrick and tight end Maliq Carr, are also in the transfer portal.

Glover, a sophomore who caught 14 passes for 261 yards this past season is on a visit to the University of Georgia this weekend. So far Glover has one reported offer from East Carolina.

The Badgers were a mediocre passing team in terms of stats in the Big Ten, although their volume was pretty high in terms of attempts, with 429, which was second highest in the Big Ten, trailing only Maryland. Fickell is hoping to add octane to his offense for 2024 with a new quarterback in Miami transfer, Tyler Van Dyke.

In addition to Henry, Fitzpatrick, Glover and Carr being in the transfer portal, Michigan State also graduated its more consistent receiver, Tre Mosley. Mosley had 28 catches in eight games in 2023 before being lost for the year to an injury.

Michigan State expects its leading receiver, Montorie Foster, to return. He had 43 catches in a breakthrough season in 2023. Foster has not entered the portal.

Michigan State announced earlier this week that wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins is being retained by new head coach Jonathan Smith.

Hawkins expects to work with Foster, redshirt sophomore Antonio Gates and Alante Brown, plus incoming freshmen, and any support players Michigan State can get from the transfer portal.

Sources tell SpartanMag’s Jim Comparoni that Kent State WR transfer candidate Trell Harris visited Michigan State on Tuesday. Harris (6-1, 187, La Grange, Ill.) had 26 catches for 400 yards for Kent State in 2023.

Michigan State has more work to do in the portal to offset the loss of Henry and the potential loss of Glover. Freshmen Jaelin Smith and Aziah Johnson redshirted for Michigan State in 2023. Smith was on the dress/travel list for the final game of the 2023 season against Penn State.
