Four-star Michigan State legacy recruit Amari Vickerson stands out at SMSB National Showcase

DETROIT - Four-star legacy defensive tackle Amari Vickerson performed on in-state turf for the first time, Sunday at the Sound Mind Sound Body National College Showcase at Wayne State University, and didn’t disappoint as an Michigan State recruiting target. The 2027 four-star, 6-foot-4, 290-pound defensive tackle showed the explosion and strength he inherited from his father, former Michigan State and NFL defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson. The younger Vickerson displayed high-end technical handiwork, also handed down from Big Vick, who served as a grad assistant, and then assistant defensive tackle coach under Mel Tucker for three years at Michigan State. Vickerson - who played portions of 10 seasons in the NFL, including three with the Denver Broncos - has relocated to Houston. In Texas, he has helped coach and developed a gaggle of young prospects, 30 of whom came with him to the Sound Mind Sound Body camp this past weekend. Amari Vickerson was satisfied with his performance. “I think I did pretty good,” Amari said. “My hand speed is up to speed. I had quick feet, good hands, good hips. I had a wonderful strike. I just had an arsenal today, man. I wanted to dominate and show them who I am and what I’ve known for.” Vickerson will be a junior at Cy Ranch High School in Houston this fall. He is ranked the No. 262 player in the country in the On3 Industry Rankings and No. 39 in Texas. He has scholarship offers from Michigan State, Michigan, Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Florida, Florida State and Miami, among others. He has visited Michigan State, Texas, Texas A&M, Michigan, Florida, Florida State, Alabama and LSU. The Vickersons, and some of their Houston contingent, were on campus at Michigan State on Monday. That marked Amari’s second unofficial visit to Michigan State. “I was up there coaching, so he was up there a lot with me as well, back then,” Kevin Vickerson said. “So the lay of the land, he knows it, it’s green and white. We’re going to see how this thing goes from here.” Kevin Vickerson has maintained a watchful eye on the Michigan State program. “Always, always,” he said. “That’s home.” MORE INSIDE SpartanMag.com.
