Maliq Carr is on the cusp of being a starting tight end for Michigan State. He has done it by changing his outlook toward the position. Carr no longer sees himself as a big receiver, and welcomes the opportunity to use his size and athleticism as a run blocker. It has taken Carr three years to get to this point, and the journey has not been easy. The Spartans need a complete tight end badly, and they may just have one in former wide receiver that currently weighs in at 6-7, 262. “It changes us immensely, because you have to defend the entire field,” Tight ends coach Ted Gilmore said. “Maliq has a unique skillset. For a big man, he can still move. There’s not a lot of big people out there that can move like that. He really has a chance, now that he is going to be a starter, to really make a name for himself, and put himself in position to do some great things.”
