As the calendar turns to 2023, the Michigan State recruiting focus is beginning to transition to the class of 2024.

One of the top targets on the board for the Spartans in 2024 is four-star Buford (GA) defensive end KingJoseph Edwards. He is ranked the No. 37 overall recruit, the No. 5 EDGE, and the No. 8 recruit in Georgia by the On3 Consensus rankings

The 6-foot-4, 240-pounder holds over 40 offers from schools across the country.

His offer list includes Alabama, Georgia, USC, Ohio State, Tennessee, North Carolina State, Florida State, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Texas A&M, Michigan, Pittsburgh, and Oklahoma.

The Spartans offered Edwards in May, 2022. The four-star visited Michigan State that same year in July during the annual Spartan Dawg Con event.

“Excellent,” Edwards told SpartanMag in the summer after his visit. “The coaches, support staff, and Mel Tucker are all excellent. Very personable.”

He was also hoping to visit East Lansing this fall for a game but was unable to after suffering a season ending shoulder injury. Edwards tells SpartanMag.com that he will visit East Lansing again on Jan. 14 for an unofficial visit.

“Coach Tucker is my guy,” Edwards said. “His energy (stands out). He’s always positive and in a good mood.”

Scouting report

“KingJoseph Edwards earned the nod as On3 MVP at the Under Armour Atlanta regional after putting together what was the most complete day from start to finish. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder impressed in with quick, explosive movements in footwork drills. When the bags came out, he promptly showed off active and violent hands. Those skills crossed over to the 1-on-1 portion of the day where Edwards put together a number of impressive wins against offensive tackles. He won his first rep with a quick first step and high-level inside move. He also showed some speed to power and pop on contact in following reps.

Edwards was also singled out as a standout performer by Under Armour defensive line coach Nathan O’Neal following the event. The 2024 prospect holds offers from the likes of Texas A&M, Texas, Florida State, Tennessee, Arkansas and several others. He’s transferred to powerhouse Buford (Ga.) High after playing his sophomore season at Hebron Christian Academy.”

NIL

Edwards currently has an On3 NIL Valuation of $95k.. The On3 NIL Valuation is the industry’s leading index that sets high school and college athletes’ projected annual value (PAV). The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
