NFL Draft pick Luke Newman credits Michigan State's Jim Michalczik with key coaching point

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Luke Newman credited Michigan State offensive line coach Jim Michalczik with helping put developmental touches on his talents during one year with the Spartans, leading to the interior lineman being selected by the Chicago Bears in the NFL Draft on Saturday. The Bears selected Newman in the sixth round, No. 195 overall. At 6-4, 315, Newman became honorable mention All-Big Ten in his lone season at Michigan State after transferring from Holy Cross. However, he was not invited to attend the Senior Bowl, the top meat market for draft prospects. Newman’s NFL Draft stock rose after strong showings at the East-West Shrine Game and at Michigan State’s Pro Day. However, some questions remain about his less-than-ideal arm length. Newman was asked about that potential shortcoming by Bears media during his post-draft press conference. “(For) Coach (Jim) Michalczik at Michigan State, that was a really coaching point that he had used with me throughout every week of the year, talking about hand placement and leverage,” Newman said.
