Michigan State basketball lands top transfer portal target Frankie Fidler

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo made waves on the recruiting trail when he landed Omaha transfer Franke Fidler via the transfer portal on Tuesday. Fidler announced his commitment via social media.
Michigan State joined Fidler’s recruitment later than his other finalists, but closed the deal during his final official visit on April 13. Fidler is Michigan State’s first transfer commitment since Tyson Walker in 2021.
Fidler averaged 20 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting 35 percent from three-point range last year at Nebraska-Omaha. He led Omaha in points, rebounds and steals in each of the last two seasons.
Fidler earned First Team All-Summit League honors last season, and Second Team honors the season before.
The Bellevue, Neb., native fits the mold of Izzo’s top transfer priority this offseason.
“I do think we need to find a bigger wing that can shoot it,” Izzo told radio host Jack Ebling on the Drive with Jack earlier this offseason.

Fidler heavily considered a return back to Omaha. He also took official visits to Wisconsin, Creighton and Nebraska. But Michigan State took advantage of batting last for Fidler and made his final visit count.
The Spartans will add Fidler to a 2024-25 roster that includes plenty of young returning talent in Jeremy Fears, Tre Holloman and Xavier Booker, among others. Fidler projects to slide into Michigan State’s starting lineup as a wing, opposite Jaden Akins who would move to the two-guard spot.
Izzo will continue to work the transfer portal, too. Earlier this offseason, Izzo told local radio show host Tim Staudt that Michigan State is in the market for potentially one or two transfers, depending on the fit. Sources tell SpartanMag that Michigan State is scouting the portal for a center.
