Michigan State and Tom Izzo added a second commitment to their 2025 recruiting class on Oct. 22, landing four-star Cam Ward of Washington (D.C) Largo High School. Ward announced his commitment during a ceremony at his high school, choosing Michigan State over other finalists in Kansas State, Maryland, and Virginia.

Ward is ranked a four-star, the No. 55 overall recruit in the 2025 On3 Industry Rankings. He is also ranked the No. 12 small forward and the No. 2 recruit in Maryland.

The 6-foot-7 reigning Maryland Gatorade State Player of the Year winner took official visits to each of his four finalists, along with trips to Notre Dame, Florida State, Marquette, and Vanderbilt.

Ward visited East Lansing for an official visit during the same weekend as the first commitment in the Spartan class in wing Jordan Scott (Oct. 5). The visit consisted of the annual Izzone Campout event which took place after the annual Midnight Madness event on Oct. 5. Ward and Scott make up the entirety of the Michigan State 2025 class.

“I chose Michigan State because of the atmosphere, the family atmosphere,” Ward told On3’s Joe Tipton. “The love and support that they show towards their players and just the support system they have. The coaches support them, all the way up to the managers. They have a bond, a strong bond there. I honestly think that it’s the best fit for me. With Coach Izzo’s plan to get me to the league and what everyone else has planned for me, I just love it. I just love the atmosphere down there. Everything that they did. They put me through a work out. I just love the atmosphere, surroundings, it’s so supportive and they never judge. Only to get you better and encourage you and those are the things that I liked about them.”

“Taking a visit and just seeing the atmosphere, it was crazy,” Ward previously told Tipton. “Coach Izzo has a very detailed plan on how he’s going to use me within the offense and use me within the defense. His plan is to make me the most versatile player in the country. With his track record, he’s done it. Miles Bridges, Draymond Green, Jaren Jackson, just to name a few. Those are guys that play my position, the wing and the forward.

“(Izzo) made plays for them and now they’re all in the league, making second contract type of money. That’s why I believe in him (Izzo). I’m not going to say he can get me there (NBA), because I still have to put in the work but he can definitely push me and he has the blueprint.”

Scouting report:

“Cam Ward has a great frame with good length and athleticism. The best part of his game might be his nose for production. Ward finds his way on the boards and is very opportune in finding scoring opportunities. Ware is at his best playing downhill toward the rim. He stretches his legs in transition and can finish above the rim in traffic. Would like to see him continue to develop more off the bounce, especially counters when his straight line path is cut off, and more consistency with the jump shot. Ward is a physical defender able to guard either forward position. He has produced, consistently, at each level.” – On3’s Jamie Shaw.
