East Lansing, Mich. Michigan State defensive end Zion Young will enter the transfer portal, he announced via social media Friday afternoon. Young’s entry will be made official on Dec. 4, when the portal opens for non-graduate transfers.

“I want to thank Michigan State University and coach Tucker for the opportunity to be here,” Young said in a statement released Friday. “That allowed me to grow in every aspect of life and to make great memories during the process. I am forever grateful for everything the coaches have done for me. To my teammates, I appreciate the bond and brotherhood we built over the past two years.

“With that being said I will be entering the transfer portal and evaluating all of my options for the next season as an upcoming junior.”

The 6-foot-6, 265-pound Young emerged as a regular contributor on Michigan State’s defensive line this fall, totaling 26 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 10 games. Young appeared in eight games last season as a freshman, including two starts. He logged 21 tackles and two sacks during his first year in East Lansing.

The Atlanta native committed to Mel Tucker and Michigan State in December 2021, over offers from Missouri, Illinois and West Virginia, among others. A former three-star high school recruit, Young was ranked the No. 77 EDGE recruit in the 2022 class, as well as the No. 108 player from Georgia, per the On3 Industry Rankings

Young is the 15th Michigan State player to either enter the portal or announce their intent to enter the portal since Monday. He joins linebacker Darius Snow, tackle Spencer Brown, quarterback Katin Houser, guard Kevin Wigenton, tackle Ethan Boyd, quarterback Sam Leavitt, wide receiver Christian Fitzpatrick, quarterback Noah Kim, receiver Tyrell Henry, guard Geno VanDeMark, receiver Jaron Glover, defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, punter Michael O’Shaughnessy and tackle Brandon Baldwin.
