Michigan State received a commitment from transfer portal offensive lineman Caleb Carter, formerly of Western Carolina, on Tuesday. The Spartans secured the redshirt junior’s commitment after official visits to East Lansing (Dec. 9), Wake Forest (Dec. 11), and Arizona (Dec. 13).

Michigan State offensive line coach Jim Michalczik offered the 6-foot-3, 310-pound lineman on Dec. 5. Since Carter played for an FCS program, he was able to enter the portal on Nov. 26. He received 21 offers during his stay in the portal.

Carter – native of Jacksonville, N.C. – chose the Spartans over offers from Arizona, San Diego State, South Florida and Wake Forest, among others.

The Jacksonville (N.C.) Southwest Onslow High School product was a three-star transfer prospect, per the On3 Industry Transfer Portal Rankings. He was the No. 507 player in the portal.

Carter played in 34 games over the past five years for Western Carolina. He played in all 11 games this fall after only playing in two the year prior due to a season-ending injury. Carter played in 11 games (including one start) for the Catamounts in 2022, and 10 games, mostly on special teams, in 2021. He redshirted the 2020 season, his first at Western Carolina.

Carter projects as an interior offensive lineman – either guard or center – for Michigan State. The Spartans will graduate center Tanner Miller, left guard Luke Newman and right guard/left tackle Brandon Baldwin, all of whom started along the interior of the Spartan offensive line this fall.

Additionally, redshirt senior Dallas Fincher entered the portal on Monday. As a result of those departures, offensive line is one of the biggest positions of need for Michigan State this portal cycle. The Spartans plan to add three to four offensive linemen through the portal this offseason.

Carter becomes Michigan State’s second offensive line commitment of the 2025 transfer portal cycle. He joins fellow interior lineman Luka Vincic, formerly of Oregon State. Michigan State also picked up a commitment from former Sacramento State running back Elijah Tau-Tolliver on Tuesday.

Michigan State holds two wide receiver commitments in the transfer class as well, including former Kent State speed receiver Chrishon McCoy and former Middle Tennessee State deep threat Omari Kelly. Cornerback Joshua Eaton, formerly of Oklahoma and Texas State, rounds out the Spartans’ current transfer class.
