Michigan State is expected to hire former Indiana co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Chad Wilt as a defensive assistant, according to a report from Matt Zenitz. Wilt’s official title on the Spartan staff is currently unknown.

Wilt, a Carlisle, Pa., native, spent the previous two seasons at Indiana. He held the title of defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2022. Indiana updated his title to co-coordinator during the 2023 season.

Wilt joined recently-hired Michigan State defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Joe Rossi’s staff at Minnesota in 2020. He spent two seasons working with the Gophers’ defensive line unit before departing for Bloomington, Ind.

Prior to his time at Minnesota, Wilt worked as defensive line coach at Cincinnati during the 2019 season, under then-head coach Luke Fickell.

The 23-year coaching veteran began his career at Central Connecticut State University, where he worked with the program’s defensive line and special teams from 2001-03. He accepted a graduate assistant role at Virginia following his three seasons at CCSU.

After two seasons (2004-05) at Virginia, Liberty University hired Wilt as special teams coordinator and defensive line coach. The former two-time NAIA All-American defensive end re-joined the Virginia coaching staff as defensive line coach after one season with Liberty.

Wilt departed the Cavalier program following the firing of head coach Al Groh. He then joined Richmond’s staff as defensive line coach for the 2010 season.

Wilt would then join the Ball State coaching staff in 2011, spending three seasons (2011-13) as the program’s defensive line coach.

After finding success in the Mid-American Conference, Maryland hired Wilt to coach the Terrapins’ defensive line unit from 2014-15. After Maryland fired head coach Randy Edsall midway through the 2015 season, Wilt joined the staff at Army-West Point in the same role.
