REPORT: Michigan State hires Jon Boyer as quarterbacks coach
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State has hired former Oregon State tight ends coach Jon Boyer as its quarterbacks coach, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel released Friday evening.
Boyer worked under current Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith for six seasons at Oregon State (2018-23). Boyer spent nearly all of his time with the Beavers as an offensive quality control assistant and offensive senior advisor. He took over as interim offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for the 2023 Sun Bowl, which occurred after Smith left for Michigan State.
Smith’s successor, Trent Bray, promoted Boyer to tight ends coach ahead of the 2024 season.
The Grand Junction, Colo., native worked with current Michigan State offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren, tight ends coach Brian Wozniak, offensive line coach Jim Michalczik and running backs coach Keith Bhonapha during his time at Oregon State.
Boyer helped develop an Oregon State offense that averaged 31.8 points per game in 2023 and 32.2 points per game in 2022. He has helped coach several quarterbacks throughout his career, including former Beaver starters DJ Uiagalelei and Jake Luton, the latter of whom threw for 28 touchdowns and three interceptions as a senior. The Jacksonville Jaguars later selected Luton in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Prior to his time at Oregon State, Boyer spent six years as FCS Northern Colorado’s offensive coordinator, from 2011-17. He received a promotion to associate head coach during the latter portion of his tenure with the Bears. Boyer was also Northern Colorado’s quarterbacks coach in 2011.
Boyer served as D-II Colorado Mesa’s offensive coordinator from 2007-10. He began his coaching career in 2002 as a member of Northern Colorado’s strength and conditioning staff. His first stint with the Bears lasted four seasons. Boyer spent two seasons as their quarterbacks coach in 2004 and 2005.
