Michigan State hockey continued its red-shot recruiting streak Thursday night, landing United States National Team Development Program U17 forward Cullen Potter (5’9, 161). The highly-touted recruit picked Michigan State over Michigan, North Dakota and Minnesota.

“The dynamism two-way blend Potter offers is like nothing anyone else in the classes possesses,” Puck Preps regional scout Chase Allen said in his latest scouting report. “And frankly, I feel like he still may be somewhat underrated and or unrecognized relative to some others in the class.”

Potter is the No. 1 ranked ’07-born North American skater, according to Puck Preps. The elite forward finished last season with 87 points (43 goals, 44 assists) in 52 games for Dallas Stars Elite 16U AAA.

Potter earned a spot on the US-NTDP U17 2023-24 roster, the program announced in early April. He was one of thirteen forwards named to the roster. Potter has tallied three assists through the team’s first two games.

The Hortonville, Wisc., native is also the son of former United States women’s national ice hockey team gold medalist Jenny Schmidgall-Potter.

Potter is the third highly-rated 2007 recruit Michigan State has landed since mid-August. Chilliwack Chiefs forward Savin Kirk (5’10, 150) and Niagara Falls Canucks defenseman Dryden Allen (6’0, 170) both committed to the Spartans last month.

Kirk and the Chiefs will begin their season on Friday. The Surrey, Canada, native did not tally a point in two games with the Chiefs during the 2022-23 BCHL playoffs. Kirk played the majority of the 2022-23 season with the Yale Hockey Academy Prep U18 team, scoring 26 goals and 21 assists in 29 games.

Allen spent last season with the Southern Tier Admirals U16 AAA team, tallying 24 points (2 goals, 24 assists) in 36 games. The defenseman from Ottawa, Canada, has one assist through four games with the Canucks in the OJHL.
