Michigan State to host four-star Pac-12 QB commit
Michigan State will host 2023 On3 four-star quarterback Sam Leavitt over the weekend for an official visit. Leavitt has been committed to Washington State since July.
“Just building a relationship with Coach Johnson made me want to visit mainly,” Leavitt said.
Michigan State and Offensive Coordinator/Quarterback’s Coach Jay Johnson began reaching out in late-October. The Spartans offered the four-star quarterback Wednesday afternoon. Johnson visited West Linn (OR) and Leavitt on Tuesday (Dec. 6).
“We have been building a relationship with the staff right now,” Leavitt said. “I like the staff a lot. Obviously, it is a great program. I am excited to go up on a visit and see what they are about.”
Leavitt is ranked a four-star by On3, and the No. 141 overall recruit in the 2023 class. On3 also has him rated the No. 10 overall quarterback and the No. 1 recruit in Oregon for his class.
He committed to Washington State over an offer from Florida State. Washington also showed interest before his commitment with the Cougars.

Michigan prepared to offer No. 1 recruit $10.5M over 4 years
He took an official visit to Washington State over the weekend (December 2-4). He is fresh off of a state championship victory. West Linn (OR) High School finished 12-1 on the year, defeating Sheldon 23-14 in the OSAA 6A Championship.
“I am going in with an open mind,” Leavitt said on the Michigan State visit.
Leavitt totaled 170 for 244 passing, 3,184 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions during his 2023 senior campaign.
Leavitt does not plan to be an early enrollee with his future school.
“Pure passer who looks like one of the top arm talents and playmakers in the deep 2023 quarterback cycle. Has a stout frame, measuring at 6-foot-2, 197 pounds with a 9.5-inch hand prior to his senior season. Also registers as a good athlete, running a 4.67 second 40-yard dash and 4.38 second short shuttle. A senior riser who turned in a fantastic final season after transferring high schools. Led his team to a state title, while completing 69.1 percent of his passes for over 3,000 yards (a stellar 12.6 yards per attempt) and 36 touchdowns against five interceptions. Pairs that accurate, efficient statistical profile with considerable arm talent. Makes eye-popping throws with regularity, including some of the best individual plays we’ve seen from a 2023 signal caller. Has outstanding natural passing mechanics with quick, fluid arm action. Generates considerable velocity on his throws to all levels. Can drive and layer the football from off-platform. Plays with natural field vision and throws receivers open. Looks to be a loose, coordinated athlete. Shows some playmaking ability with his feet, rushing for 713 yards and eight touchdowns, including a big game on the ground in the state championship game. Fares well against the pass rush and shows creativity both as a passer and runner. Has some football bloodlines as his father was a linebacker at BYU and his older brother, Dallin Leavitt, is a safety with the Green Bay Packers.”
