Michigan State lands 2025 three-star running back Zion Gist after official visit
Michigan State added to its 2025 recruiting class when three-star running back Zion Gist committed Monday afternoon. Gist spent Sunday and Monday in East Lansing for an official visit and de-committed from Western Michigan shortly after his visit.
Gist had been committed to Western Michigan since June. Michigan State offered him late last week, and he scheduled an official visit soon thereafter.
“The visit was amazing,” Gist told SpartanMag. “The coaches really took the time to show me what the program is all about. I’m grateful for the opportunity to see it all and meet the people there. Big things are coming for Michigan State, and it’s really cool that they view me as part of it.”
Michigan State running backs coach Keith Bhonapha ramped up his interest in the Gist over the past few weeks, with current running back commitment Jace Clairizo heavily considering his recent offer from Alabama. The Spartans would gladly take both running backs in their 2025 class, which currently sits at 16 commitments.
Gist (6-0, 197) is the No. 2,029 recruit in the 2025 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings. He’s also the No. 146 running back and the No. 55 recruit from Illinois. Gist’s senior film has not yet been evaluated by major recruiting services, as his season ended this past Saturday.

Gist’s high school team, Frankfort (Ill.) Lincoln-Way East, saw its season come to a close with a loss to Loyola (Ill.) Academy. Lincoln-Way East finished 12-1 on the season. Gist told SpartanMag that his senior highlight tape should be completed and posted within the next few weeks.
Michigan State also welcomed a pair of 2025 defensive backs for official visits this past weekend. Richmond (Va.) Trinity Episcopal School defensive back Terrance Edwards, the cousin of former Spartan receiver Felton Davis, visited campus. I have placed a prediction for Edwards to end up in the Spartans’ 2025 class.
Miami (Ohio) cornerback commit Cairo Skanes also spent the weekend in East Lansing. North Carolina State, Duke and Wisconsin, among others, have also made a late push for Skanes.
