Michigan State continued to expand its 2026 recruiting class on Saturday, this time adding a surprise commitment from three-star Sioux Falls (S.D.) Jefferson High School tight end Edward Whiting. Whiting (6-6, 230) announced his commitment via social media.

Michigan State offered Whiting during an unofficial visit in November 2024. That represents his only trip to campus thus far. Michigan State became Whiting’s first Power Four offer, and his second offer overall, joining South Dakota. Minnesota was the only other program to offer later that fall.

Whiting has since burst onto the scene, picking up offers from Alabama, Michigan, Auburn, Florida, Iowa, Wisconsin, UCLA, Washington and Missouri, among others, this offseason. Spartan tight ends coach Brian Wozniak visited Whiting twice during the January evaluation period. Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith accompanied Wozniak on the second visit.

On3 ranks Whiting the No. 19 tight end and No. 1 player from South Dakota in the 2026 class. The 2026 On3 Industry Rankings have Whiting listed as the No. 409 recruit, No. 22 tight end and No. 2 player from South Dakota in his class.

Whiting tallied 29 receptions for 383 yards in 10 games last season. He received First Team All-State honors as a result. Whiting also recorded nine tackles and three sacks on defense. He plays basketball for Jefferson High School and owns a 6-foot-10 wingspan.

Michigan State now holds three commitments in its 2026 class. Whiting joins Mansfield (Ohio) Lexington High School tight end Joey Caudill, along with On3 four-star quarterback Kayd Coffman, of East Kentwood (Mich.) High School. Coffman committed to the Spartans on Friday.
