Michigan State lands commitment from three-star RB Makhi Frazier
Michigan State landed its first commitment of the Jonathan Smith era in McKinney (Tex.) High School three-star running back Makhi Frazier. The one-time Oregon State commit announced his pledge via social media Tuesday afternoon.
“Michigan State is everything I want in a school,” Frazier said. “The big-time football they play and the people that are there. Really, just being able to develop on and off the field.”
Frazier announced his de-commitment from Oregon State on Dec. 1, just four days after Smith departed Corvallis, Ore., to accept the Michigan State head coaching position.
“I bring everything that Coach Smith talks about,” Frazier said. “I play a physical brand of football and I am able to do it for the whole game.”
Former Beavers’ running backs coach Keith Bhonapha—Frazier’s primary recruiter—followed Smith to Michigan State. Bhonapha’s hiring was made official on Dec. 7.
“I was with coach (Erik) Highsmith and coach (Keith Bhonapha) most of the time,” Frazier said following his official visit to East Lansing, which occurred during the weekend of Dec. 8. “It was good because I am a big relationship guy. The relationship I have with coach (Bhonapha) is really good, so it was good catching up with him and seeing the new place.”

Michigan prepared to offer No. 1 recruit $10.5M over 4 years
This weekend’s official visit was not Frazier’s first time in East Lansing. Michigan State’s previous staff hosted the three-star in April 2023.
Frazier—who measures in at 5-foot-10, 210 pounds—is the No. 1679 recruit in the nation, according to the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings. He’s also the No. 133 running back and the No. 238 prospect from Texas in his class.
In addition to Michigan State and Oregon State, Frazier held offers from Minnesota, Missouri, Arkansas, Boise State, UNLV, North Texas, Tulsa and Utah State.
Michigan State now has eight commitments in its 2024 recruiting class: River Rouge (Mich.) High School four-star wide receiver Nick Marsh, Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Riverdale three-star defensive backs Jaylen Thompson and Keshawn Williams, Cincinnati (Ohio) Christian Hills three-star offensive linemen Mercer and Charlton Luniewski, Kingston (Pa.) Wyoming Seminary three-star safety Justin Denson, Portage (Mich.) Northern three-star linebacker Jadyn Walker and McKinney (Tex.) High School three-star running back Makhi Frazier.
