Michigan State has its quarterback for its 2026 recruiting class. East Kentwood (Mich.) High School quarterback Kayd Coffman, an On3 four-star recruit, announced his commitment to the Spartans via social media on Friday.

Coffman (6-2, 198) becomes Michigan State’s first in-state 2026 commitment and the second member of the Spartans’ 2026 class, joining Ohio tight end Joey Caudill. Caudill (6-5, 225), of Mansfield (Ohio) New Lexington High School, committed to the Spartans on Jan. 24.

The quarterback is the No. 22 recruit at his position, and No. 4 player from Michigan in the 2026 class, per the On3 Rankings. On3 ranks Coffman the highest of the four major recruiting services.

He threw for 1,594 yards, completing 104 of 187 passes, logging 11 touchdowns and two interceptions as a junior in 2024. Coffman also ran the ball 36 times, logging 241 yards and a touchdown.

Coffman holds three-star status in the On3 Industry Rankings, which averages the rankings provided by those four recruiting services. He is the No. 422 player, No. 27 quarterback and No. 8 player from Michigan in his class, per the On3 Industry Rankings.

Michigan State offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren extended an offer to Coffman on Nov. 13, 2024. At the time, Coffman held additional offers from Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Western Michigan. Michigan State was his first Power Four offer.

A couple months after Michigan State extended the offer, programs like Ole Miss, Iowa State, Cincinnati, Duke and Syracuse began extending offers of their own. Coffman visited Iowa State in late January, but canceled his spring visit plans to Ole Miss, among other programs. Shortly thereafter, he shut down his recruitment and committed to the Spartans.

Coffman grew close with Lindgren during his recruitment. He also connected with newly-hired quarterbacks coach Jon Boyer during his most recent visit to East Lansing on Jan. 19, the day of Michigan State’s junior day event.

“We were sitting by each other, talking before the (Michigan State basketball) game, halftime, timeouts, just really getting to know him (Boyer) a little bit,” Coffman said. “We sat down in his office and I saw his presentation he had for me. A big part of the day was just coach Boyer and I really trying to pack as much time together.

“Coach Boyer is a great guy. He’s a family man. That’s something I really picked up from him. He talked about his kids and his wife, and how his son is involved. Also, just how he interacts as a coach and his philosophy of teaching and how that’s really what coaching is, teaching guys based on how they learn.”

When Coffman enrolls at Michigan State ahead of the 2026 season, he will join a quarterback room that contains 2025 signee Leo Hannan, of Long Beach (Calif.) Servite High School, 2024 signees Ryland Jessee and Alessio Milivojevic, and starter Aidan Chiles, should all of those players choose to exhaust their remaining eligibility in East Lansing.

“(Michigan State) likes my ability to move the ball downfield horizontally, as well as my ability to move out of the pocket and improvise making plays,” Coffman said. “They told me they really saw growth in my game throughout the past season with decision-making and my poise.”
