PORTAL UPDATE: Michigan State lands former Eastern Illinois CB NiJhay Burt
Michigan State landed yet another portal commitment Friday afternoon, this time in former Eastern Illinois cornerback NiJhay Burt. He announced his commitment via social media.
Burt, a junior, took an official visit to Michigan State on Thursday. The Munhall, Pa., native has one year of eligibility remaining.
Burt (5-11, 185) started all 12 games for FCS Eastern Illinois this fall. He logged 64 tackles, five pass break-ups, three interceptions and one forced fumble. Burt played in 13 games as a sophomore in 2023, logging 16 tackles and three interceptions. He also played in eight games as a freshman in 2022.
The Munhall (Pa.) Steel Valley High School product helps shore up Michigan State’s cornerback depth. The Spartans lost starter Charles Brantley to the portal earlier this month. They’re also set to lose graduating senior Ed Woods at the position. However, Chance Rucker, Caleb Coley, Ade Willie, Jeremiah Hughes, Lejond Cavazos, Andrew Brinson and Keshawn Williams all have the option to return.
Michigan State also signed three class of 2025 defensive backs in three-stars Aydan West, George Mullins and Terrance Edwards.

Burt represents Michigan State’s eighth transfer portal commitment of the cycle. He joins fellow cornerback Joshua Eaton, formerly of Oklahoma and Texas State, in the class. Expect Michigan State to continue to be active in the cornerback market.
Michigan State also holds two transfer wide receiver commitments from former Kent State slot receiver Chrishon McCoy and former Middle Tennessee State deep threat Omari Kelly.
The Spartans also hold a commitment from former Sacramento State running back Elijah Tau-Tolliver, offensive linemen Caleb Carter (Western Carolina) and Luka Vincic (Oregon State) and defensive tackle Grady Kelly (Florida State).
