East Lansing, Mich. Michigan State landed a verbal commitment from junior college long snapper Drew Wilson on Saturday. Wilson, a native of Redondo Beach, Calif., earned a five-star ranking from Rubio Long Snapping, a service founded by trainer Chris Rubio that ranks the top long snappers in the country.

Five stars is the second-highest ranking a prospect can earn from Rubio Long Snapping. Players with five-star rankings are described as “FBS Freshman Year Starters” and “Scholarship Picks” on their website.

Wilson is the No. 31 long snapper in the 2023 class according to Rubio Long Snapping. He was offered a scholarship by Florida A&M and Idaho State

Wilson spent the past two seasons playing linebacker and long snapper for Long Beach City College in Long Beach, Calif. Before that, Wilson attended Redondo Union High School.

Rubio Long Snapping had the following to say about the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Wilson:

“(Wilson) absolutely destroyed the agility course on Sunday (at the Rubio Long Snapping Las Vegas Camp) and left no doubt that he can snap at the next level. Form is great and he has improved a ton recently to the point of he is snapping a college ball right now. Really impressive performance by Drew all weekend. Type of long snapper that can be snapping the ball for a long, long time. Great attitude.”

Junior Hank Pepper will try to resume starting duties at long snapper this fall. Pepper started the first five games last season but missed the final seven due to injury. Pepper was named a captain for Michigan State’s home matchup with Ohio State last season despite his injury.

Walk-on Michael Donovan, who has since transferred to Miami, took over long snapping duties for Michigan State following Pepper’s injury. The Spartans’ kicking and punting units became inconsistent without Pepper in the lineup.

Pepper started all 13 games at long snapper as a freshman in 2021, totaling 131 special teams snaps that year.

Michigan State also brought in former Ohio State walk-on Mason Arnold from the transfer portal in January as a result of Donovan’s departure. Arnold and Pepper were the two long snappers on Michigan State’s spring roster, but with the addition of Wilson, Michigan State will have more options at the position if needed.
