EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State landed its third transfer of the offseason when former Miami point guard Divine Ugochukwu committed to the Spartans on Sunday. The rising sophomore has three years of eligibility remaining.

Ugochukwu (6-3, 190) entered the transfer portal on April 2. The Sugar Land, Texas, native visited Michigan State on Monday and Tuesday. He also received interest from Texas Tech and USC. A four-star transfer prospect, Ugochukwu was the No. 261 player in the portal, per the On3 Transfer Portal Rankings.

Ugochukwu averaged 5.3 points, 2.3 assists (to 1.6 turnovers) and 1.9 rebounds per game on 48.3 percent shooting (17.6 percent from three) in his lone season at Miami. He started 16 of his 28 appearances for the Hurricanes and averaged 20.1 minutes per game.

Ugochukwu recorded a season-high 15 points in Miami’s opener against Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 4. Two games later, he scored 12 points against Coppin State. Ugochukwu logged a season-best seven assists on Jan. 4 against Virginia Tech. He also scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds against Louisville on Feb. 8.

Ugochukwu took on a larger role for Miami after starting point guard Nijel Pack went down with a season-ending injury on Dec. 10. The Hurricanes finished last season with a 7-24 (3-17) record. Longtime head coach Jim Larranaga stepped down on Dec. 26.

A former late-blooming three-star recruit out of Sugar Land (Texas) Clements High School, Ugochukwu committed to Miami over the likes of Baylor, West Virginia and Xavier.

Larranaga described Ugochukwu as “a high-IQ point guard with elite athleticism and a great feel for the game,” per On3’s CaneSport.

Ugochukwu joins a Michigan State transfer class that also includes former Samford guard Trey Fort and former Florida Atlantic wing Kaleb Glenn.

The addition of Ugochukwu brings Michigan State to 11 scholarship players for the 2024-25 season.

Ugochukwu will likely begin his Michigan State career backing up Jeremy Fears at the point guard position. Fort and rising sophomore Kur Teng make up the rest of Michigan State’s scholarship options in the backcourt.

Glenn, rising junior Coen Carr and incoming freshmen Cam Ward and Jordan Scott are all capable of playing on the wing for the Spartans. Rising seniors Jaxon Kohler and Carson Cooper, along with rising redshirt freshman Jesse McCulloch, round out Michigan State’s frontcourt.
