Current Michigan State players react on social media to Jonathan Smith hire
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State football named Oregon State’s Jonathan Smith the 26th head coach in program history on Saturday. The former Beaver quarterback will arrive in East Lansing after a six-year stint at his alma mater, garnering a 34-35 overall record. Smith—who led Oregon State to its first 10-win season since 2006 last year—won the 2022 PAC-12 Coach of the Year award.

REACTIONS
Redshirt senior running back Jaren Mangham—a Detroit native—has 1,326 rush yards and 23 touchdowns in his five college seasons. Mangham told media earlier this week he was weighing his options and could return next year.
Starting defensive tackle Derrick Harmon—who is also from Detroit—has been top contributor on the Spartan defense in his third season.
Michigan State sophomore wide receiver and return man Tyrell Henry has caught 24 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns. The former Roseville (Mich.) High School three-star committed to wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins.

Defensive end Ken Talley—who began his college career at Penn State—transferred to Michigan State prior to the 2022 season. After sitting out last season, Talley has seen limited action in his second year in East Lansing.
Offensive lineman Gavin Broscious has yet to see the field as a Spartan after suffering an apparent knee injury this past spring. The redshirt freshman shared his rehab progress on Twitter last week.
First-year offensive lineman Cooper Terpstra originally committed to Grand Valley State prior to accepting a walk-on offer to play at Michigan State.
Originally from Florida, Charles Brantley was a major recruiting win in former Spartan head coach Mel Tucker’s first recruiting class. Brantley has missed the majority of the 2023 season with an injury.
