Michigan State QB Aidan Chiles leaves Indiana game with injury; Smith: 'Not season-ending'
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State quarterback Aidan Chiles left the Spartans’ game against Indiana on Saturday with what appeared to be an upper body injury.
Spartan head coach Jonathan Smith said after the game that he does not think Chiles’ injury is season-ending. He said the same about the other Michigan State players who sustained injuries against Indiana: safety Malik Spencer, rush end Anthony Jones and cornerback Charles Brantley. Brantley went into the locker room following his second-quarter injury and returned to the sideline on crutches.
“The quick report I got – obviously they’re looking for further evaluations – this isn’t season-ending for any of those guys,” Smith said. He clarified further and said that he expects Chiles to play in two weeks against Illinois.
While those four aren’t expected to miss significant time, Michigan State has dealt with a rash of other injuries this season. The Spartans have lost six players to season-ending injuries. They listed four others as “out” on this week’s availability report. Given that attrition, Smith wants to see his players continue to step up in place of their injured teammates.
“This is November now,” Smith said. “Injuries are going to take place, and there are going to be opportunities for other guys to get into the game. They’ve been practicing for a long time. I’m convinced, listening to those guys in the locker room, this group, they’re going to be back to work, stick together. They know that, yeah, we got embarrassed today. It left a terrible taste in our mouths. But that’s what you sign up for sometimes when you play big-time ball against a good team and you don’t play well. Now we have to bounce back, and I plan on these guys doing that.”
Chiles left the game with 8:20 remaining in the third quarter and Michigan State down, 30-10. On second-and-nine from the Indiana 43-yard line, Chiles faced pressure from Hoosier defensive end Mikail Kamara. Chiles scrambled to his right and fired a pass out of bounds to avoid a sack, but still managed to receive hits from Kamara and Indiana linebacker Rolijah Hardy from behind.
