Michigan State releases week 14 availability report

East Lansing, Mich. Michigan State will take the field against Rutgers on Saturday without wide receiver Alante Brown, cornerback Jeremiah Hughes, linebacker Wayne Matthews, cornerback Caleb Coley, safety Armorion Smith, safety Dillon Tatum, cornerback Chance Rucker and safety Malik Spencer, according to its weekly availability report.

Michigan State listed all eight of those players as “out.” The Spartans listed defensive tackle D’Quan Douse as “questionable.” Douse did not see the field last week against Purdue.

Michigan State played without all eight of its players listed as “out” last week. The Spartans remain thin in the secondary as a result of those injuries. Four starters and four reserves are out with injury.

Cornerbacks Ade Willie and Ed Woods, safeties Nikai Martinez and Jaylen Thompson and nickel back Angelo Grose project to start in the Michigan State secondary against Rutgers.

Matthews will miss his third straight game with an undisclosed injury. Brown will miss his second straight game.

Tight end Jack Velling will return after suffering an upper body injury as a result of a gruesome hit last week against Purdue. He spent time in the hospital after getting stretchered off the field and recovered throughout the week.

Michigan State remains without safety Khalil Majeed, cornerback Charles Brantley, tight end Michael Masunas, defensive end Avery Dunn and guards Kristian Phillips and Gavin Broscious, all of whom have sustained season-ending injuries.
