Notes, observations and jersey numbers from Michigan State's roster release
Indianapolis – Forty-one new names and faces will be part of the Spartan football team in 2023, according to the latest official roster, released by Michigan State on Tuesday at Big Ten Media Days.
A few notables after perusing the new roster:
* Junior quarterback Noah Kim has changed his jersey number from No. 14 to No. 10, taking the number formerly worn by previous Michigan State starter Payton Thorne, who transferred to Auburn in May.
* All 15 incoming freshmen are listed on the official roster, plus junior college scholarship transfer offensive tackle Keyshawn Blackstock. There were no surprise omissions.
* The roster includes place kicker Jonathan Kim, a transfer from North Carolina, who is expected to be the lead candidate for kicking duties this fall. The roster also includes two true freshman walk-on kickers: Yousef Obeid of Dearborn, Mich., and Tarik Ahmetbasic of Clinton Township (Mich.) Chippewa Valley. They will compete with Stephen Rusnak, a redshirt sophomore walk-on from Clarkston, Mich., who missed his only field goal attempt in 2021 and is 4-of-5 on extra points for his career for the Spartans.
* The roster includes 12 mid-year transfers who participated in spring practice for Michigan State and seven post-spring transfers who are on the official roster for the first time.

#17 DB Armorian Smith (6-1, 205, R-Jr., Detroit), transfer from Cincinnati.

#97 PK Jonathan Kim (6-0, 210, R-Sr., Fredericksburgh, Va.), transfer from North Carolina.
#99 DT Jalen Sami (6-6, 330, Gr-Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.), transfer from Colorado.
#38 DB Terry Roberts (5-11, 180, Gr.-Sr., Erie, Pa) transfer from Miami and Iowa.
#41 LSN Drew Wilson (6-2, 225, Jr., Redondo Beach, Calif.), transfer from Long Beach City Community College.
* Mason Arnold, a senior long snapper who transferred to Michigan State from Ohio State in the spring and participated in spring practice, has since transferred to Florida State.

* Junior college transfer long snapper Drew Wilson, from Long Beach (Calif.) Community College, committed to Michigan State earlier this summer and officially became part of the roster today. Wilson (6-2, 225, Redondo Beach, Calif.) will wear No. 41.
The roster release included eight true freshmen who enrolled this summer and did not participate in spring practice for the Spartans:

There were no position changes on the roster from spring practice.
The heights and weights of the players have not been updated since last fall. Michigan State officials informed media on Tuesday that updated heights and weights will be available during preseason practice.
The Spartans will report on Aug. 2, and the first practice will be on Aug. 3.
